Four-wheel steering technology first appeared in the 1980s, with Nissan introducing it on the R31 Skyline GTS in 1986 via its High Capacity Actively-controlled Suspension, or HICAS. Mitsubishi joined in 1987 with the Galant VR-4, boasting a turbo four-cylinder, all-wheel drive, and four-wheel steering known as 4WS. In 1988, Honda's Sensing Angle Honda Four-Wheel Steering System debuted in the U.S. Prelude, marking the first American-market vehicle with this feature.

Though these setups varied, their core idea remained consistent - rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts for enhanced high-speed stability or opposite for superior low-speed agility. The fad soon waned, as initial versions failed to deliver reliable handling gains over standard front-wheel steering setups. Cost was another barrier: Honda's 4WS added $1,300 to the under-$20,000 Prelude.

Undeterred, General Motors ventured into the technology, launching Quadrasteer in the early 2000s for its GMT800 trucks and SUVs. Partnering with Delphi Automotive, GM made it standard on the 2002 GMC Sierra Denali. Unlike rivals with turning circles of 43.7 to 52.3 feet, Quadrasteer shrank it to 37.4 feet, excelling in tight parking and towing scenarios. Yet, the premium price proved prohibitive for most buyers.

How Quadrasteer Operated

Quadrasteer relied on a modified Dana 60 rear axle equipped with rack-and-pinion steering, an electric motor, and multiple sensors. Drivers could select from three modes: 2-wheel steer, 4-wheel steer, or 4-wheel steer tow. The first mode deactivated rear steering, while the second allowed rear wheels to follow the fronts.

Under 7 mph, rears turned up to 12 degrees opposite the fronts; between 7 and 40 mph, the angle tapered off. Above 40 mph, they aligned up to 5 degrees with the fronts for stability. Tow mode held the 12-degree low-speed angle to aid trailer control, and reverse capped it at 5 degrees either way. Reviews from Car and Driver praised its performance, noting the truck handled like a compact car when parking and stayed planted while hauling.

Prohibitive Pricing Sealed Its Fate

GM's misstep came in pricing Quadrasteer at $7,000 as a 2002 option, per a 2005 WardsAuto analysis. Sales suffered, prompting cuts to $4,495 in 2003 with a $2,000 rebate, then $1,995 in 2004. The system's intricacy added 350 pounds to the Sierra, further deterring interest.

Buyers dismissed it as an expensive novelty rather than essential. Only 5,502 units sold in 2004, insufficient to offset costs. Quadrasteer vanished from options by 2005 and never reached the GMT900 platform.

Rear-wheel steering returns in the 2026 GMC Sierra EV, limited to AT4 and Denali trims. Its future looks uncertain amid GM's delays on electric trucks like the Sierra EV, Silverado EV, and Escalade IQ.
