General Motors is fully committing to its technology and energy company branding. Following a quick shift away from its electric vehicle focus, the Detroit-based firm has invested heavily in tech by cutting thousands of positions while adding staff skilled in AI and related fields. These moves are now in action, with AI supporting vehicle design efforts that the new chief product officer claims will deliver improved GM products in less time.

The company introduced its AI design tool in April, built on years of GM design and testing information from many vehicles. This system lets designers and engineers share one platform where design updates appear instantly for the team, allowing quick adjustments across components. It also incorporates test data for immediate feedback, such as calculating drag coefficients from body changes to refine shapes. Tasks once handled by teams building and testing physical models in wind tunnels now move faster through AI, though human oversight stays essential.

GM draws on decades of internal data for its AI system

Benefits exist for a tool like this. With access to over a century of records, GM can quickly review digitized design and test details instead of manual searches or calculations. It also improves teamwork in large organizations by placing all design work in one spot, enabling real-time updates and reducing missed messages or overlooked emails.

GM notes AI aids model testing by simulating road conditions, including varied surfaces and sudden obstacles like wildlife. The system uses historical data to run these virtual tests. This approach lowers the need for multiple physical prototypes and cross-country shipments to sites like the Milford Proving Grounds or Arizona desert facilities, cutting material use and logistics costs. Still, questions linger about whether AI fully captures real-world variables, given current limits in autonomous systems with detecting people, animals, and other vehicles.

Plans call for more vehicles produced faster and improved

Sterling Anderson, GM chief product officer since 2025, explained to Fast Company that development cycles could shrink from four or five years to about two. He noted that shorter intervals between generations would bring evolutionary gains in vehicle quality. Similar efforts at other firms have required extra engineering fixes and led to recalls, showing the approach carries risks.

GM may reduce upfront costs while rebuilding after scaling back EV plans, but quicker design alone may not guarantee better results. The first AI-designed model, the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado, used simulations for its V8 engine to meet performance and emissions targets in one-third the usual time and with 20 percent lower prototype costs. Real-world outcomes will determine success, especially if prior data includes past issues.

Buyers expect reliable vehicles that perform well

Customers may prefer dependable vehicles over rapid model releases. Buyers spending around the average new vehicle price of over $50,000 should not face frequent repairs or recalls. While AI design effects at GM are still emerging, past experiences at other automakers suggest caution. Quick fixes after launch work poorly as a standard method. Ford's challenges offer a warning for firms adopting unproven AI solutions across all processes. Savings today could lead to higher costs later if quality suffers.
