General Motors has not yet confirmed plans to introduce its Super Cruise hands-free driving system in Australia, even after submitting a local trademark application and advancing the feature in other regions.

The company lodged the trademark request with IP Australia on October 7, 2025. A GM Australia and New Zealand spokesperson noted at the time that filing proprietary names in active markets is standard procedure.

No formal launch details were provided then, and the situation has stayed the same even as GM prepares the technology for additional countries.

“We’ll always keep looking at it. Obviously [regulation] is one of the hurdles right now,” GM ANZ managing director Jess Bala told CarExpert.

“I can tell you our policy team is asking the right questions globally, because it is an amazing technology, so I hope so, but I cannot confirm it either way right now because there are so many other external factors at play as well.”

Super Cruise functions as a Level 2+ autonomous driving aid that permits hands-free operation on more than a million kilometres of mapped roads in North America, mainly divided highways rather than urban streets, though it handles all speeds including heavy traffic.

The mapped routes extend beyond busy US and Canadian cities to include remote areas such as North and South Dakota.

Super Cruise merges adaptive cruise control with lane-centring and employs a driver-facing camera to confirm attention to the road. Recent updates enable it to identify safe moments for automatic lane changes.

The system relies on cameras, sensors, radar and GPS, but its core strength comes from detailed LiDAR-generated map data.

GM announced last May that Super Cruise would soon reach the Middle East after completing digital mapping in Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. In September the company secured approval in Saudi Arabia for panoramic imaging work.

The feature has been offered in the US and Canada since 2017 and arrived in China in 2020.

GM has noted that regulations are not the only obstacle to an Australian launch.

“Mapping typically costs millions of dollars,” Super Cruise product manager Jeff Miller told Australian media in Michigan last June.

“It depends on the scale, the number of miles that you have to map, are they continuous roads,” he said when asked how long mapping takes.

“Typically, it’s about two years to do a country.”

Mr Miller added that GM uses a proprietary LiDAR map created by a contracted supplier with specially equipped vehicles. GM cars themselves do not carry LiDAR sensors.

The map data stays exclusive to GM and is not shared with rivals such as Ford, whose BlueCruise system launched in 2021.

When asked about potential cost-sharing for mapping, Mr Miller replied: “It depends. There are crowdsource maps like Mobileye… And then there’s… TomTom. They all have different maps. They are not high-fidelity, to the level of fidelity that we would like, so we have a separate company that we contract – DMP.”

Super Cruise is now available on more than 20 models in North America, including several already sold or arriving soon in Australia such as the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon Denali, and Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq and Vistiq.

Some of these vehicles in Australia retain the black steering-wheel panel that lights up on North American versions when Super Cruise is active.

Without the system locally, models like the Cadillac Lyriq launched with only standard lane-keep assist.

GM in North America has introduced a lane-centring feature usable on unmapped roads, and the Cadillac Optiq and Vistiq will bring this to Australia, with the Lyriq scheduled to receive it in the next model-year update.

After deciding late in 2024 to stop funding its Cruise robotaxi operations following a widely reported pedestrian incident, GM is now directing resources toward improving Super Cruise.

The company describes this as part of a “cautious and safety-first approach to autonomous driving technology”.

“The reason we’ve constrained Super Cruise to where we constrained it to is because you don’t have to worry about pedestrians, people on bikes,” said Mr Miller, explaining the focus on divided highways.

“There’s a lot of those unknown scenarios that you get into that are more difficult to develop around. That obviously increases the cost of the sensing set that you need to detect those.”

Tesla, by comparison, operates its Level 2+ Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system on a wide variety of roads. Drivers may remove their hands from the wheel, although local regulations still require constant attention and vehicle control.

FSD-equipped vehicles in Australia are currently receiving the v14.3.3 update.
