GM Issues Warning on Possible Contamination in Brake and Clutch Fluid Bottles

May 12, 2026 - General Motors recommends against using select bottles of ACDelco GMW DOT 3 brake and clutch fluid.

This advice targets products labeled with lot number 01977 091222, produced in 2022.

GM reports that the fluid could contain visible sediment, though the supplier has not pinpointed the exact source. The company suspects it stems from a "precipitate formed by two additives in the brake fluid."

More than 40,000 bottles are included in the recall, as contaminated fluid may compromise braking performance.

Highlights from GM's investigation:

"Supplier testing reveals that the visible precipitates in the examined sample arise from two additives within the brake fluid, rather than external contamination. Such precipitates are normally removed by filtration during production or bottling. The reason for their appearance in this sample is still unclear."

A third-party testing facility detected the issue in June 2024, leading GM to launch a probe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration joined the effort and verified that GM had logged no related warranty claims.
