The enduring collaboration between SAIC, parent of MG, and General Motors has been extended by 20 years, bringing both advantages and drawbacks for certain GM brands.

Formed in 1997, the SAIC-GM joint venture was set to conclude next year but will now continue through 2047.

While SAIC and GM have not disclosed exact financial details, available reports suggest the partnership stays 50-50 with profits divided equally.

A GM representative informed CNBC that the SAIC-GM-Wuling venture with Guangxi Automobile has also been lengthened, covering Wuling, Baojun and Huawei-linked Huajing models.

GM confirmed Chevrolet will be phased out in China without a specific schedule, though Chevrolet vehicles made there will shift entirely to export.

Several Wuling and Baojun models already appear as Chevrolets in Latin America and elsewhere, and these are expected to keep the bow-tie badge from Chinese plants.

With Chevrolet exiting the Chinese market, GM will concentrate on Cadillac and Buick, the latter serving as its main volume brand in the country.

Instead of relying primarily on US- and Europe-developed vehicles, the venture will expand a range of locally defined products and China-specific technology solutions.

SAIC-GM intends to introduce at least 30 new energy vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, extended-range EVs and battery electrics, by 2030, expanding the Buick Electra lineup launched in 2025.

Beyond limited models such as the Cadillac CT6 and Buick Envision, most China-built Buick and Cadillac vehicles have stayed domestic; the updated deal will turn SAIC-GM into an export base for chosen global markets.

The Buick Electra E7 SUV begins overseas shipments in October, though target markets remain unspecified and some units may receive Chevrolet badging.

GM China chief John Roth stated the company remains focused on China performance while pursuing opportunities in the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific.

The joint venture has built more than 20 million vehicles since 1997, and China once ranked as GM's largest market with roughly 14 percent share and annual profit transfers near US$2 billion.

Like other foreign automakers, GM has faced pressure from rising local brands and EVs, posting losses in 2024 and 2025 before returning to profit this year.
