Ford and Chevrolet keep swapping Nürburgring stories, yet the two brands chase separate achievements on the famous track.

The Mustang GTD Competition completed a lap of the Nordschleife in 6:40.835 with Dirk Müller at the controls. That mark beats the Corvette ZR1X production-car time of 6:49.275 from July 2025 by roughly eight and a half seconds.

Earlier this year the street-legal Mustang GTD posted a 6:52.072 production-class record at the same circuit with Müller driving, before Ford returned with the more focused Competition version in March 2026.

Tony Roma, General Motors executive chief engineer for Corvette and performance vehicles, states his group has no plans to schedule another trip to Germany in the near term.

Ford's newest effort falls into a separate category from Chevrolet's. The Mustang GTD Competition's 6:40.835 is recorded in the Prototypes and Pre-Production vehicles group, whereas the Corvette ZR1X's 6:49.275 sits under Production and Sports Cars. Chevrolet's additional 2025 Nordschleife runs include a 7:11.826 for the Z06 and a 6:50.763 for the ZR1, all captured at the identical venue.

The distinction between prototype and production classification changes how the times are viewed. The GTD Competition result stems from a pre-production development car, while the Corvette laps represent the quickest American production vehicles.

Roma accepts Ford's achievement without argument. The lap time was impressive, and at that moment it stood as the quickest American car around the Ring, and we remain very proud of our own sub-seven-minute effort, he noted when discussing the Corvette record. Chevrolet had not issued an official Nürburgring lap in 13 years prior to that run. The team approached it as a complete race weekend, supported by Michelin engineers and battery-analysis experts.

This background illustrates that Chevrolet's lap was no casual outing. Roma presented it as evidence of what the wider organization could achieve with a series-production car.

Ford's prototype-level reply simply arrived sooner and more precisely than Corvette anticipated, even though it occupies a different section of the Nürburgring record listings.

Corvette Chooses Pikes Peak Over A Nürburgring Rematch

I am not planning to head back for a direct response to match what they accomplished, Roma said when addressing the question directly. I do not see it as a requirement to return to the Nürburgring and counter Ford's result.

Chevrolet's focus has already moved to another mountain, in a literal sense.

The ZR1X completed the 2026 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 9:30.104 with driver JR Hildebrand, a run Roma notes was arranged before anyone at Chevrolet learned Ford's Nürburgring time. Ford also appeared at the event: its electric SuperVan 4.2 prototype, a Transit-based Ford Performance project, secured the overall victory in 8:18.202 and updated the event's electric record.

Pikes Peak offers Corvette a platform on domestic ground rather than a rematch centered on Ford's prototype lap. Roma described the hill climb as an opportunity to highlight the car's ability at one of America's signature motorsport sites. It represents a distinct message compared with trading times at an overseas circuit.

None of this rules out future attempts permanently. Ford's record pursuits have involved several vehicles over the past decade, including notable Ford GT development runs in the late 2010s and early 2020s, and Chevrolet has not excluded another Nordschleife effort later on.

For the present, Roma's group is satisfied to keep the 6:49.275 production-car record in place while Ford's 6:40.835 leads the prototype and pre-production standings.
