Ford has verified that its Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, set to support multiple models including a Ranger-sized electric ute, has been developed with right-hand drive (RHD) compatibility to suit regions such as Australia.

The electric vehicle architecture, backed by a US$5 billion (A$7.16 billion) investment, will form the basis for several Ford electric offerings, among them the recently previewed affordable ute that matches Ranger dimensions.

"The platform supports right-hand drive, though specific details remain unavailable at this time," a company representative stated to US media, as reported by Ford Authority.

"The UEV serves as a globally adaptable platform, with Ford intending to export vehicles, yet no information on locations or timelines has been released," the spokesperson added.

Ford Australia has yet to provide updates or confirm sales of any UEV-based models locally, but the RHD readiness matches earlier statements about using the platform for export vehicles.

The company previously noted that the new ute must demonstrate success in the US prior to expansion elsewhere, following teaser images shared earlier in 2026.

Recently observed during US testing, the ute is expected to carry the 'Ranchero' name upon its 2027 launch and highlight UEV benefits such as gigacasting along with advanced production methods.

Paired with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and efficient electric motors, these elements aim to make UEV models more competitive against traditional petrol vehicles.

"The significance of our UEV platform efforts, including its innovations, sourcing strategies, and complexity reductions, are now being applied and expanded across our entire range. Substantial insights are emerging," Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Model e divisions, shared with Automotive News.

The UEV initiative was revealed in 2025 amid Ford's EV strategy shift, after canceling its lowest-priced US model, the Escape SUV, a former Toyota RAV4 competitor once available locally, leaving a gap in affordable options.

The Escape has also been discontinued in Australia, alongside the smaller Puma SUV and the Fiesta hatch that inspired it.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has emphasized the need for more budget-friendly vehicles, including a return to passenger cars beyond SUVs and utes, to address rising competition from Chinese manufacturers globally.

Mr Farley traveled to Australia in early 2026, noting the intense local market competition as a preview of future trends due to minimal trade barriers with partners including the US, Japan, Thailand, China, and soon the EU.

"China possesses sufficient factory capacity to supply the entire North American market and potentially displace competitors," Mr Farley remarked to CBS Sunday Morning late last year.

With Ford dealerships in Australia missing entry-level options, the most affordable current model is the Ranger XL Hi-Rider 4x2 starting at $37,130 before on-road costs and tray installation.

The lowest-priced passenger vehicle is the Everest Active, introduced earlier this year as an entry-level variant of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado rival, from $58,990 before on-road costs.

Ford announced plans earlier this year to launch five new models under US$40,000 ($57,252) in the US by decade's end, featuring petrol, hybrid, and EV variants.

Earlier this month, the automaker partnered with Renault to utilize one of its platforms for two European EVs, expected to draw from the AmpR Small architecture used in the Renault 5 E-Tech and Renault 4 E-Tech, neither currently offered in Australia.

The companies will also collaborate on a van, while Ford's ongoing alliance with Volkswagen, which markets the Ford Transit Custom as the Volkswagen Transporter in select markets including Australia, continues for the present generation.
