With spring arriving, it's time to dust off the lawnmower and prepare for grass-cutting duties. Many homeowners dive right in without preparation, but a quick inspection can prevent headaches.

Regular upkeep keeps any engine performing well, and lawnmowers are no different. Simple preseason maintenance extends your mower's life and improves cut quality for a healthier lawn.

Here are five critical checks to ensure smooth operation. Start with fresh fuel in the tank - avoid stale gas from last season. Next, sharpen the blade for clean cuts. Then handle the basics: air filter, oil, and spark plug replacements, similar to car care. Riding mowers may need tire pressure checks too, and push models have other details, but these five are must-dos.

Verify the Fuel

When you first pull out the mower, resist using leftover gas from fall. Old fuel evaporates and forms varnish that clogs the carburetor, often degrading after just 30 days.

Ideally, run the tank dry at season's end or add a stabilizer. For garage cans, use the gas in your car over winter. If overlooked, drain it properly: siphon into a container with the mower elevated, tip carefully, or disconnect the fuel line. Find local recycling for safe disposal.

Refresh the Oil

Examine the oil's color - dark means it's time for a change, regardless of last service date. Top off clean oil if recent; otherwise, swap it out. Dirty oil leads to wear, smoking, seizing, or overheating.

Select appropriate oil: small-engine formulas like SAE 5W-30 suit most, Vanguard 15W-50 for commercial use, SAE 30 for heat, or 10W-30/synthetic 5W-30 for cooler areas.

Change after 25-50 hours of runtime. Electric mowers may dominate soon, but gas models need this ritual for now.

Replace the Air Filter

Push mowers clog filters fast from debris, and even storage gathers dust. Restricted air starves the engine, mimicking bigger issues like hard starts or poor power.

Access is simple: unscrew the cover (often one fastener), swap the filter, and disconnect the spark plug wire first. Foam types can be cleaned and reused; new ones cost under $10. Refresh at least yearly.

Sharpen or Swap Blades

Sharp blades slice cleanly; dull ones rip, browning tips and inviting disease or pests. They also strain the engine, wasting fuel and accelerating wear. Vary patterns to fight weeds.

To sharpen: remove blade, secure in vise, file or grind to 30-degree bevel. Balance by testing on a balancer or nail - grind heavier side more for even cuts.

Inspect the Spark Plug

Swap plugs seasonally to avoid starting woes, power dips, inefficiency, or misfires. At minimum, remove, clean, and check gap.

Disconnect wire, extract with socket wrench. Verify gap on used plugs; new ones are usually set but double-check. Torque to spec on reinstall.

These straightforward steps, done in under an hour, boost reliability, longevity, and lawn aesthetics all season.
