BMW has ceased production of the Z4.
The final roadster left the assembly line earlier this month.
No successor model is in the works at present.

The end was anticipated, yet it still marks a milestone: the BMW Z4 has exited the production line for good at Magna's facility in Graz, Austria. This concludes a lineage that began in 2002, replacing the Z3 roadster.

Without the Z4, BMW now offers just one soft-top convertible in its lineup - the 4 Series. Though convertibles occupy a niche segment, their decline remains poignant for enthusiasts.

Tracing the Z Legacy

BMW's Z series has seen a fascinating progression. It debuted with the Z1 in 1991, famed for its innovative doors that retracted into the sills. The Z3 followed in 1995, larger and more potent, peaking at 325 hp in the Z3 M variant. A distinctive coupe version emerged too, evolving into a collector's item resembling a compact shooting brake.

The Z8 arrived in 1999 as the lineup's pinnacle of elegance and rarity. It starred with Pierce Brosnan's James Bond in The World Is Not Enough, succeeding the Z3 from GoldenEye. Power came from a 4.0-liter V8 with 400 hp, akin to the E39 M5.

The Z4's initial E85/E86 generation launched in 2003, then E89 in 2009, and G29 in 2018. Throughout, it spanned roadster and coupe forms, including M models reaching 343 hp.

Unlike prior Z4s, which drew from 3 Series architecture, the G29 generation diverged sharply, sharing its underpinnings and powertrains with the Toyota Supra - though BMW stuck to roadster exclusivity.

No dedicated M variant appeared this time, yet dynamism persisted via three engines, led by a 340-hp 3.0-liter inline-six.
