One important point deserves clarification right away: the latest Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale does not feature an actual manual gearbox. It relies instead on a far more sophisticated arrangement that may turn out to be even more compelling.

Known as Manuale By-Wire, the technology was created entirely in Maranello. A shift lever and clutch pedal are present, and drivers use them exactly as they would in a conventional manual car. Yet neither component connects mechanically to the transmission. All inputs become electronic signals that direct the same eight-speed dual-clutch transmission found in the standard 12Cilindri.

The powertrain itself remains mechanically identical. The naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 continues to deliver 819 horsepower and reaches a peak of 9,500 rpm. Ferrari has focused its reinvention on the connection between the driver's controls and the gearbox, resulting in an intriguing engineering achievement.

The Shifter: Crafted for a Mechanical Feel

The shift assembly weighs under 7.7 pounds yet contains hidden engineering details. A solid block of high-strength steel, machined from billet to precise tolerances, ensures the lever shows almost no play even after extended use.

Two distinct rotational movements handle gear selection and engagement. Eccentric rollers automatically center the lever after each move. The key sensation occurs at engagement through a profiled rotating drum paired with a preloaded mechanism that builds resistance then releases it suddenly, producing the familiar click felt at the knob. The drum receives a special surface treatment to preserve this feel throughout the vehicle's life.

Hall-effect sensors track the lever position on both axes via magnetic fields without physical contact. An electromagnetic solenoid serves as a lockout to block disallowed shifts. Ferrari also tuned the mechanism's acoustic output to enhance feedback. Reverse engages by pressing the lever downward and moving it to the upper-left gate position, matching classic Ferrari layouts.

The Clutch: Handling Mistakes Gracefully

A new pedal box adds the third pedal. Like the shifter, the clutch operates entirely by wire. An angular position sensor measures pedal travel and converts it into hydraulic commands for the dual-clutch transmission packs.

Creating a natural feel for the electronic pedal required a passive mechanical setup with a preloaded spring, cam, and roller. This arrangement reproduces the resistance curve of a traditional clutch, increasing effort during release before easing at the engagement point. Because resistance comes mechanically, response remains immediate while sensors align engine and transmission actions.

Behind the wheel the system mimics a conventional manual. Precise timing yields smooth shifts, while mistimed moves produce a jolt or possible stall. Manual mode covers the first six forward gears plus reverse and activates only via the clutch pedal. No steering-wheel paddles appear, a first for Ferrari in recent years.

Automatic mode lets the dual-clutch transmission manage shifts independently. Drivers can still preselect gears with the lever, and the instrument cluster shows the resulting engine-speed change in advance. Heel-and-toe downshifts remain possible by coordinating throttle and brake. Overuse of the clutch on launch can stall the engine, experiences many Ferrari owners have not encountered recently.

Maranello has achieved something notable. Whether the system fully recreates the charm of a traditional manual will become clear only after time behind the wheel.
