Ferrari keeps applying camouflage to the Luce after its public introduction.

The Luce is not the initial vehicle to adopt this unusual wiper arrangement.

Discussions rarely focus on disguised test cars once a model has received its official reveal. Automakers seldom maintain such coverings following a premiere. More than a week after the Luce appeared publicly Ferrari has yet to strip away every bit of disguise from this prototype in final testing phases.

Captured by Derek Photography along Italian roads the Luce has shed the van-style coverings seen before its end-of-May debut. A narrow remaining strip of disguise remains which draws extra notice to Maranello's latest five-door hatchback instead of concealing it.

Although the overall styling has fueled online debates one aspect has received less attention amid talks of the Luce's unique appearance: the peculiar windshield wipers. Beyond their sizable arms they sit vertically and protrude more than expected. They appeared less prominent in official images due to darkened A-pillars yet stand out clearly here.

Reasons Behind the Ferrari Luce Strange Wipers

Ferrari chose this arrangement to improve aerodynamic performance. The company dedicated over five years to perfecting the shape for minimal resistance. Teams conducted roughly 6000 CFD simulations along with 250 hours of scale-model wind-tunnel work. An additional 80 hours focused on full-scale body refinements.

Every element received attention to deliver the lowest drag coefficient among Ferrari road cars so far. The Luce achieves a Cd of 0.254 with the distinctive wiper positioning aiding that result. Even so the wipers remain noticeable on a vehicle with an already bold design.

Did SEAT Handle It Better?

The Luce is hardly the first production model with this wiper layout. Immediate examples come from SEAT the Spanish Volkswagen Group subsidiary. The 2004 Altea hid its wipers behind a black trim piece spanning the full A-pillar height and extending across the cowl in a U formation.

Introduced the following year and styled by the same Walter de Silva the 2005 Leon omitted the U element yet kept wipers less visible than on the Ferrari Luce. They seemed tucked under the A-pillars lending the related hatchback a sleek profile.

The Tesla Cybertruck large single wiper also sits vertically and offers comparable visibility to the Luce dual setup.

Motor1's Take: Attention to windshield wipers may seem minor given the vehicle's overall appearance. Once noticed however they prove hard to overlook as they remain exposed and stand upright along the windshield edges. This detail is unlikely to deter buyers committed to the Luce.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna noted recently that funds are flowing into accounts with robust interest from new clients and bank transfers already received from attendees at the launch event.
