Ferrari studied the return of pop-up headlights for its upcoming 849 Testarossa yet modern safety standards and homologation rules pushed designers toward an alternative approach.

Lead designer Jason Furtado explained to CarExpert that the team examined Ferrari concept and production models from the 1970s through 1990s to assess whether the signature feature could reappear.

Furtado referenced a heritage that includes early 1970s concepts plus road cars such as the 512 BB, 288 GTO, F40 and F355, all of which helped establish pop-up headlights as iconic Ferrari traits in their eras.

Designers examined a similar layout for the 849 Testarossa in both coupe and Spider versions, but the concept could not satisfy the demands of a contemporary worldwide production vehicle.

Furtado noted that the difficulty extended beyond a single regulation set. The 849 Testarossa must satisfy distinct safety and compliance rules across every market including China and the United States, and the aggregate demands rendered pop-up units impractical.

The resulting solution stands as one of the car most striking and debated elements. Ferrari integrated fixed headlight modules into a slim black bridge that runs across the full front end. This fascia treatment narrows the lights visually while evoking the look of classic Ferrari models with headlights retracted.

Ferrari presents the front treatment as a deliberate reference to the pop-up headlights of the 288 GTO.

The same bridge motif appears on the 12Cilindri and F80, yet on the 849 it also forms a continuous aerodynamic element above the splitter and body-coloured accents.

Ferrari has therefore referenced pop-up headlights without copying them directly. This method reflects the overall design direction of the 849 Testarossa, which avoids being a simple modern replica of the 1984 original.

Although the name invites that connection, Ferrari design references focus mainly on 1970s sports prototypes, especially the 512 S and 512 M.

Furtado observed that this period brought a shift in Ferrari styling. The rounded shapes of the 1960s gave way to sharper forms shaped by aerodynamics, cooling needs and larger intakes. The 849 Testarossa follows the same thinking.

Its sculpted doors direct air toward the rear rather than serving only as decoration. Each door outer panel is formed from a single aluminium alloy pressing.

Behind the doors, vertical black sections add further intakes and visually narrow the body at the waist. Ferrari compares the effect to a corset that makes the doors and side profile appear shorter and lighter.

The twin rear tails draw more directly from the 512 S and 512 M. They are functional as well. Ferrari states the two passive elements create 10 per cent of total rear downforce by managing airflow over the rear wheel arches.

They operate with an active rear spoiler that moves between low-drag and high-downforce settings in under one second. The outcome is a vehicle shaped by Ferrari history yet not limited by it.

When asked if future models would adopt the 849 design language, Furtado said the ability to create distinct identities remains a strength of Ferrari in-house studio.

The Daytona SP3, F80, 12Cilindri and 849 Testarossa avoid the uniform family look seen at some other makers. Instead designers draw from historic racers, aeronautics, fighter jets and industrial design.

This freedom produces cars that require time to appreciate. On handling immediate online criticism, Furtado said many people revise their opinions after viewing a car in person and learning the reasoning behind its details.

The design team largely sets aside social media commentary rather than letting it steer the brand toward conservative choices.

Furtado added that setting new trends matters more than playing it safe. The goal is to create desirable new objects for the imagination.

The 849 Testarossa takes the place of the SF90 at the top of Ferrari regular production lineup. Its plug-in hybrid system pairs a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors for a combined 772 kW.

Ferrari states the 849 Testarossa Spider can reach 100 km/h from rest in less than 2.3 seconds, hit 200 km/h in 6.5 seconds and exceed 330 km/h.

The coupe starts at 932648 dollars before on-road costs in Australia while the Spider begins at 1015589 dollars before on-roads and options.

Australian Spider deliveries are planned for the first quarter of 2027, roughly six months after the coupe arrives locally.
