Battery lifespan remains a key concern for electric vehicle buyers, and Ferrari has addressed it directly with smart engineering in the new Luce.

The Luce features a 122kWh battery on an 800V system, built so its cells can be swapped for advanced versions years later. The chassis and outer housing stay fixed permanently, while the internal components allow easy updates.

Modules sit in a flexible grid inside the housing instead of being locked down, enabling swaps even if current cells become unavailable decades from now. This lets owners refresh the Luce with whatever battery advances emerge over time.

"The chassis, the car and the battery housing are forever," noted Elena Ligabue, head of battery pack development at Ferrari. "What we can do is replace the technology inside with something new in the future. That is why there is no fixed grid inside the housing. We create the grid with the modules."

This approach aligns with Ferrari's focus on long-term ownership. The brand provides a seven-year maintenance plan, and the Luce includes an eight-year warranty on major electric parts such as axles, battery and charging hardware. Refreshable cells support that extended ownership model.

The pack is built entirely in-house at Ferrari's dedicated e-building facility in Maranello. Cells enter the site, and finished modules plus complete packs exit, mirroring the company's traditional in-house engine production for quality control.

Ferrari selected large pouch-style cells for their energy and power balance, delivering about 305Wh/kg gravimetric energy density. Cells connect in series into modules of 14, with shared plates handling cooling and swelling during charge cycles. Fifteen modules fit in total, with 13 in the floor and two beneath the rear seats.

This integrated structure strengthens the vehicle overall. The battery's aluminium plates contribute to the chassis load path.

"At the end, you cannot distinguish what is chassis and what is battery pack, because the two elements are fused together," Ms Ligabue explained.

Embedding the pack this way boosts rigidity and lowers the centre of gravity.

Each module includes its own controller that checks temperature every second and voltage every millisecond, balancing cells to maintain steady performance throughout the battery's life.

The design reflects careful planning, and the swappable cell concept offers real benefits for long-term Luce owners.
