When the United States established Yellowstone as a public park in 1872, the notion of a national park remained fairly novel. Among the government-protected landscapes worldwide, Bogd Khan Uul in Mongolia and Main Ridge in Tobago rank among the few older than Yellowstone National Park, yet it was the Yellowstone designation that helped spread the concept rapidly across the globe. Since the creation of the National Park Service in 1916, the nation's parks have formed a central element of American identity.

Today the National Park Service manages 433 separate units including parks, preserves, and memorials while operating numerous programs aimed at protecting these natural areas and informing visitors about their heritage and ecosystems. These sites attract roughly 318 million visitors annually, confirming their widespread appeal. Although nearly half the country appears open to moving beyond car-dependent lifestyles, park visitors continue arriving by vehicle in large numbers, creating real challenges.

The National Park Service reports roughly one fatality per week from vehicle crashes on park roads, with reckless and distracted driving also endangering wildlife. The agency strongly urges slower speeds and greater attention during visits, and the advice merits close attention. National parks rank among premier road-trip destinations, and following several straightforward guidelines can keep any journey both secure and memorable. Core recommendations involve obeying standard traffic laws, practicing Leave No Trace, switching drivers regularly, and exercising caution near animals. Although these steps appear simple, they involve more detail than many realize.

Obey every standard traffic regulation

Once travelers enter the long, curving roads inside a national park, the setting can feel entirely separate from everyday life. Many visitors quickly sense the magic of these landscapes and may overlook the fact that they are still operating a heavy vehicle. The reality remains that park roads follow the same rules and laws that apply elsewhere.

Park roadways post speed limits that are typically lower than those on ordinary streets. Data from the NHTSA show that speeding accounts for about one-third of traffic deaths each year, so one of the simplest ways to protect both people and local wildlife lies completely within driver control: maintain posted speeds. Even on seemingly isolated stretches, drivers share the road with others, walkers, and animals, so they should proceed as though others are present at all times.

Extended drives through a park can feel relaxed at the advised speeds, and many visitors pause often for fresh air, photographs, or brief exploration. Between stops, occupants must refasten seat belts. Riding unbuckled remains illegal, including for children. The requirement can feel demanding when excited youngsters want better views, yet it stays essential. Drivers must also remain sober at all times.

Practice Leave No Trace

Most people have encountered the phrase from a dedicated outdoors enthusiast or a park ranger. Leave No Trace represents an ethical framework for engaging with nature that extends well beyond simply avoiding litter, though littering is strictly prohibited.

The National Park Service applies a seven-principle Leave No Trace approach that every visitor should review before arrival. The first principle calls for planning ahead and preparing, which includes checking weather forecasts, learning the specific rules of each park, and relying on maps or GPS for reliable navigation. Planning a route in advance also helps drivers anticipate road conditions and terrain.

Another principle stresses traveling and camping only on durable surfaces, a point especially relevant for motorists. An ill-advised turn or risky move can place a vehicle in sand, mud, or water. Vehicles unsuited to the route may receive citations, and this includes attempting to drive an all-wheel-drive model on a four-wheel-drive-only path. Staying on established trails is equally important, because creating new routes can cause lasting damage.

Departing a park in the same condition it was found supports long-term preservation of protected lands. Motor vehicles exert significant environmental pressure, as demonstrated by the Mojave Desert where tortoise populations have fallen sharply and thousands of miles of trails have been closed.

Rotate drivers on a regular schedule

Distracted driving poses serious risks even at the modest speeds common on many park roads. National parks offer extraordinary scenery that no one wants to miss. Viewpoints should be enjoyed safely rather than through quick glances from behind the wheel.

When traveling with companions, drivers should switch positions often and divide driving time evenly. This approach lets every participant enjoy the views while reducing the chance of distraction. It would be unfair to keep one person at the wheel for the entire trip and force that individual to choose between road safety and the surrounding landscape.

Exercise caution around wildlife

Visitors must keep a respectful distance from all wildlife regardless of the animal or any sense of familiarity. Each year people arrive at parks and either overlook the risks of close contact or assume they can manage the situation safely. The outcomes have ranged from being knocked down or thrown into the air to more serious injuries.

Observing wildlife remains one of the main attractions of the parks, and viewing is encouraged when done properly. National Park Service guidelines recommend staying at least 25 to 50 yards from most animals and at least 100 yards from bears, wolves, and large cats. If an animal shows any reaction to a person's presence, the observer is already too close. Binoculars provide the safest way to watch from a greater distance.

Maintaining distance protects both visitors and the animals. Feeding or touching wildlife is never permitted. Drivers should watch carefully for animals on or near roadways and pull completely off the road before stopping for photographs.

Handle bear encounters with care

Bears appear appealing and social, yet they can create serious problems if approached. Spotting cubs usually indicates that the mother is nearby, so the safest response is to move away while keeping maximum distance from the young. Any bear that shows interest requires following established safety procedures.

Bear safety during a road trip involves actions both inside and outside the vehicle. When traveling through bear country, never leave a vehicle unattended with food inside, particularly overnight. Bears have opened car doors in search of meals, so all scented or edible items should be stored in a bear canister placed in a secure spot.
