Before recent conflicts escalated with Iran, commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz without significant restrictions or extra costs. Markets initially showed limited reaction because many expected a swift end to tensions. That outlook is changing after Rapidan Energy Group released new analysis indicating the situation will last much longer than anticipated.

The firm now projects deeper and longer lasting disruptions that will tighten global oil supplies through the end of 2027. What initially sounded like a short delay has become a full year extension beyond earlier estimates. Analysts state they can no longer count on an early return to normal shipping conditions in the waterway.

Ongoing military risks are expected to limit vessel movements well into the coming year and keep production from Gulf states below earlier levels through the fourth quarter of 2027. This extended timeline brings further pressure on fuel costs for consumers.

Supportive of higher crude prices

Rapidan plans to release updated inventory projections in its July oil market outlook. The revised crude balance indicates inventory draws through year end, a factor viewed as supportive for oil prices. Wealthy investors may avoid major portfolio adjustments, yet everyday drivers continue facing elevated pump prices.

In recent comments, Rapidan CEO Bob McNally described three potential paths forward. With the ceasefire no longer viable, focus is likely to shift toward reducing Iran's capacity to interfere with traffic and lowering attack frequency enough to allow escorted transits. Failure to reach that point could push oil prices higher until demand destruction from an economic slowdown occurs.

McNally previously suggested prices could climb well above the prior peak of $147 per barrel and enter the $200 range. Such levels would likely translate to average U.S. gasoline prices between $6.50 and $7.00 per gallon according to earlier forecasts.

Current national averages already exceed $4 per gallon for gasoline and $5 for diesel, marking the second occurrence this year. This pattern of crossing the $4 threshold, retreating, and then rising again within one calendar year has not been observed before. Prices remain below the 2022 peaks that followed the Ukraine invasion, yet the repeated climb adds new strain.
