People have long been intrigued by the idea of mastering the natural world. With our skills, strength, and opposing thumbs, we have achieved remarkable feats. One such example is passing through the heart of a giant California Redwood using a vehicle or even a horse-drawn carriage. Although the number of these impressive trees has decreased due to past logging, it remains feasible to drive through a California Redwood. This practice began as a popular attraction for visitors to California and the western United States long before cross-country journeys by car became common. In those days, discovering robust Sequoias and Redwoods, both part of the Cypress family, and driving through them was an extraordinary experience.

The initial tunnel tree appeared in 1878 within the Tuolumne Grove to entice travelers to the Sierra Range, leveraging the allure of Yosemite and California's peaks. A passage was cut into a large Sequoia called the Dead Giant. This 200-foot snag closed in 1993. Shortly thereafter, in 1881, the Wawona Tree in Mariposa Grove was tunneled and lasted until 1969 when heavy snow caused its collapse. Another, the Pioneer's Cabin Tree in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, toppled in a storm in 2017, yet it helped draw visitors and inform the public about Redwoods and the need for their protection over many years. Notably, some of these can still be driven through in a car.

Locations for Driving Through a Redwood Now

Consider the spots where driving through a tree is possible today. Exercise caution, as they might pose a challenge for larger vehicles like Nissan Armadas. Several choices exist. Near Eureka, California, find the Shrine Tree at 13708 Avenue of the Giants in Myers Flat, California. Its opening formed naturally from a lightning-induced fire. The Chandelier Tree, located at 67402 Drive Thru Tree Road in Leggett, features a particularly broad entrance. Do not overlook the Klamath Tour Thru Tree north of Eureka at 430 CA 169 in Klamath, carved in 1976. This tree was shaped carefully around living wood to avoid harming its growth.

The ability to drive through Coastal Redwoods today stems from these being the sole variety left in the lower 48 states. While it may appear whimsical, this pursuit draws attention to the surrounding ecosystems, imparts knowledge of their past and the importance of conservation, and shares insights into West Coast heritage. Additionally, it supports the local communities that host these wonders.
