Even under time constraints, it is vital to carefully record the rental car's condition. Examine the vehicle thoroughly in the parking area and capture images of all parts. This additional effort may prove invaluable upon return. Although advanced camera systems exist that can recognize vehicles without plates, numerous rental firms have not implemented comprehensive vehicle photography setups widely.

Without your own images to demonstrate the vehicle's state at pickup, you remain dependent on the rental company to assess any issues at drop-off. You could face responsibility for unreported damage present before your rental began, and lacking visual proof makes contesting charges difficult. While such problems do not occur often, the brief time spent taking detailed photos offers valuable reassurance.

What if the rental company does use automated imaging?

Although not every rental firm employs automated imaging systems that record all-around views of vehicles at departure, many have adopted them, and adoption is expected to grow as the technology improves and costs decrease. Projections indicate up to 100 airport rental sites could use such systems by the end of July 2026. This development does not reduce the need for your own records as a backup.

The technology captures multiple exterior views before departure and after return, then uses AI to compare conditions. Photos may be taken by staff via an app or by automatic cameras during exit from the lot.

Despite the convenience, AI systems can still produce errors, as seen in recent cases involving misidentification by surveillance cameras. Relying solely on a rental company's AI for billing decisions carries risk. It is also unclear if humans review the AI results, and image quality or operator mistakes can lead to incorrect findings. These systems often omit interior views, which should also be recorded. Taking your own photos therefore provides essential protection.

How to take thorough pictures of your rental before leaving the lot

To minimize the chance of being charged for pre-existing damage, capture numerous high-quality images of both the interior and exterior before departing. If the rental is a premium model, pay extra attention to every detail. Use good lighting and combine overall views of the full vehicle with closer shots of doors, body panels, and seating, plus close-ups of any visible imperfections.

Record anything that might be viewed as damage, including minor marks, dents, paint chips, or fabric stains. Also photograph the roof, wheels, tires, and any included items such as tools or cables. Include the dashboard displays showing mileage, fuel level, and wiper condition.

After taking the photos, review them for clarity and sharpness, retaking any that are unclear. It is also wise to back up the images using cloud storage or by sending them to yourself or the rental company, ensuring access even if your phone is lost or damaged during the trip.
