Disneyland is required to retire or convert Autopia gas-powered cars to electric models by early 2027 following a California emissions settlement.
The update stems from a regulatory violation and agreement concerning uncertified ride engine emissions.
Disney is creating fully electric replacement vehicles, and the ride should remain open after the conversion.

Disneyland guests have enjoyed driving the park Autopia attraction since its debut in 1955. After more than seven decades with little alteration, the ride now faces potential shutdown unless significant infrastructure upgrades occur.

Disney paid 56250 dollars to the California Air Resources Board in 2024 for not reporting that Autopia Honda go-kart engines lacked certified emission controls, at a rate of 450 dollars per vehicle. The settlement also set a firm deadline for updating the attraction to avoid permanent closure.

KTLA reports that Disneyland must meet a February 1, 2027, cutoff to install compliant gas engines or, more probably, electric motors. Park leaders had already announced plans to modernize Autopia, yet the new timeline accelerates those efforts.

In 2024 Disney released this statement:

As the industry shifts toward alternative fuel sources, we have created a plan to electrify this attraction and are assessing technology that will allow conversion from gas engines within the next few years.
