John Clay Wolfe uncovered six vintage Corvettes concealed near an RV park just outside Corpus Christi, Texas. He aimed to secure the complete set for his inventory.

"My intention is to purchase the full group," the experienced dealer stated ahead of any talks.

He departed with a pair of numbers-matching big-blocks after paying $175,000 and left four unfinished projects in place. The transaction highlights the distinction between a genuine collector vehicle and a parts-based rebuild.

Corpus Christi Corvette Trove

The owners of the group had acquired Corvettes beginning in the early 1980s and gathered roughly 30 to 40 vehicles across four decades. A portion functioned as everyday transport while the remainder remained as incomplete restoration efforts. This combination produced variation in both condition and worth among the six cars.

Wolfe operates GiveMeTheVIN, a firm founded on thirty years of collector-car transactions, and traveled to Corpus Christi with plans to obtain everything. The sellers requested $390,000 for the six vehicles. Wolfe contemplated a $300,000 bid and established $320,000 as his firm limit.

The difference in figures prevented agreement, prompting Wolfe to concentrate on the two highest-value examples. "We secured the top two vehicles from the set," he noted once the $175,000 transaction concluded for a 1965 and a 1967 model.

The four vehicles that stayed behind presented another narrative. A 1954 example retained its original-style Blue Flame six-cylinder, and a 1962 model kept its factory block and four-speed transmission. A 1964 Corvette had been altered from fuel injection to a carburetor setup, while a customized 1967 featured later-model fuel injection that ended its numbers-matching condition.

The 1965 And 1967 Corvettes That Excelled

The 1965 convertible features a numbers-matching 396 cubic-inch V8 rated at 425 horsepower, matched to a four-speed manual gearbox. Chevrolet produced only 2,157 units of the 1965 Corvette equipped with that 396 engine. This limited production supported its portion of the purchase price.

The 1967 convertible represents the newest vehicle in the group and delivers the greatest output. Its numbers-matching 427 cubic-inch V8 is rated at 435 horsepower, supplied by three two-barrel carburetors and paired with another four-speed transmission.

Wolfe's logic centered directly on the stamping present on the engine block. "One can examine paint and chrome for hours, yet occasionally the most valuable element of the car is a small number stamped in an odd corner," he explained while describing the authentication steps that identified the keepers.

His final recommendation targeted anyone pursuing a comparable Corvette project. "Acquire completed vehicles," Wolfe advised. Avoiding the four partially finished builds in this collection also meant sidestepping the restoration challenges they carried.
