The electric Denza Z9 S sedan has made its exterior debut in China, sharing styling cues and drivetrain choices with the Z9 GT that arrives in Australian showrooms later this year and offers ultra-fast charging technology.

Car News China notes the Z9 S adopts the same design direction as the Z9 GT, created under former Audi designer Wolfgang Egger who leads styling at Denza and BYD, yet it sits in a more compact package on the shared e3 platform.

Denza Australia indicated it evaluates every model for the local market but offered no firm word on whether the Z9 S will join the lineup. The brand entered Australia in 2025 with the B5 and B8 SUVs.

The company has already locked in the Z9 GT for third-quarter arrival, with buyers first receiving the pure-electric wagon while the plug-in hybrid version sold overseas stays under consideration for future introduction.

The newly shown Z9 S stretches 5090 mm in length with a 3025 mm wheelbase, making it 105 mm shorter overall than the Z9 GT and 145 mm shorter than the current Z9 sedan.

Limited technical information has surfaced, though regulatory filings list three battery-electric options for the Z9 S: two single-motor setups and a top version tipped to feature a tri-motor layout delivering 1194 hp.

By comparison the flagship Z9 GT produces 850 kW and sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds.

The documents leave the exact motor count and battery capacity for the top Z9 S unconfirmed, yet the Z9 GT flagship uses a 122.496 kWh Blade 2.0 pack for up to 820 km of CLTC range. The Z9 S is rated at 780 km under the same cycle.

Two single-motor powertrains will also be offered in China. The base version makes 320 kW with a 102.326 kWh Blade battery, matching the entry-level Z9 GT.

A stronger rear-drive variant develops 370 kW on the same battery size, and both single-motor Z9 S models are claimed to reach 920 km of CLTC range.

For reference the Z9 GT in China achieves up to 1036 km with its larger pack. Australian examples will introduce flash charging that replenishes the battery from 10 to 97 per cent in as little as nine minutes.

Denza has confirmed plans to fit ultra-fast chargers at its own outlets before rolling the network out to additional sites nationwide.

In China the Z9 S comes with 19- or 20-inch wheels, a 250 km/h top speed and is expected to include the latest God's Eye B driver-assistance suite that combines LiDAR, AI modelling and rapid processing.

Denza has also shown the Z sports car in both convertible and coupe forms, an electric four-seater positioned against the Porsche 911.

Although still unconfirmed for Australia, the Z is offered in right-hand drive and will spearhead the brand's United Kingdom launch later this year.

The news arrives as BYD records strong Australian growth, coming within 243 sales of overtaking Toyota in June 2026, the closest any brand has come since Holden last outsold Toyota in May 2011.
