Cupra Australia has confirmed it will not reintroduce the Born electric hatchback for the foreseeable future.

In comments to CarExpert, the brand's local head of product Jeff Shafer noted there are no current plans to return the discontinued Born following its 2026 facelift.

He explained the focus for Cupra's electric lineup has shifted to the larger Tavascan electric SUV and the smaller Raval electric hatch that debuted earlier this year.

"Although the Born is not offered in Australia right now, it remains on our radar. Our immediate EV priorities center on the Tavascan and the forthcoming Raval to give each model a distinct position in the Cupra lineup," Mr Shafer said.

"We will keep talking with our global colleagues, and while reintroducing the Born is not scheduled yet we would never rule it out entirely."

The Cupra Born reached Australia in 2023 after its 2021 global launch and marked the Spanish brand's first electric vehicle worldwide. It uses the rear-wheel-drive Volkswagen Group MEB platform shared with models such as the VW ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, the larger Cupra Tavascan, and the Skoda Elroq and Enyaq.

It became the first dedicated Volkswagen Group EV to arrive locally after several delays and strategy shifts at Volkswagen and Skoda. It is still the sole non-SUV model on the MEB platform sold in Australia.

Pre-orders began in December 2022 and Cupra sold 1654 units of the Born through the end of May 2025. The single-variant launch model was originally slated to be joined by the 240kW Born VZ performance version.

Cupra Australia never launched the performance model locally but imported one evaluation unit that was later sold to an enthusiast for more than $70,000.

While overseas markets offered several battery and motor combinations, Australia received only the 170kW version paired with the 77kWh battery for MY23 and MY24, aside from that single VZ example.

In March this year Cupra revealed the facelifted Born featuring bolder styling, a more upscale cabin with some traditional controls, and a new Android-based infotainment system that includes a larger 10.25-inch digital cluster plus improved driver aids.

The updated model with the 79kWh battery is claimed to deliver more than 600km of WLTP range, while the VZ variant is said to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds.

Although a return to Australia was once considered, Cupra Australia has determined the business case does not support it at present.

Mr Shafer has instead pointed to the smaller Raval, positioned as the brand's new affordable EV, as the likely entry point for Cupra's electrified range in Australia.

At 4046mm long, 1784mm wide and 1518mm tall with a 2600mm wheelbase, the Raval matches the footprint of the Volkswagen Polo and offers 441 litres of boot space.

In Spain the Raval will come with four motor outputs ranging from 85kW to 166kW, two battery sizes of 37kWh and 52kWh, and up to 450km of WLTP range.

Positioned below the Leon Hatch in its home market, the Raval could start around the $40,000 mark when it reaches Australia, expected in 2027.

The original Born launched at $59,990 before on-roads in 2023 and was available near $47,000 drive-away in its final phase.

Despite strong overall EV sales in Australia in the first half of 2026 amid high fuel prices and supply constraints linked to Middle East tensions, electric passenger cars continue to lag behind SUVs in growth.

The compact BYD Atto 1 leads electric passenger vehicle sales with 3254 registrations through June 30, just ahead of the Tesla Model 3 on 3192. The Tesla Model Y SUV remains the top EV overall with 20,396 units sold in the same period.

Total EV deliveries reached 103,843 in the first half of 2026 according to FCAI and EVC data, marking a 119.8 per cent rise from the prior year and more than doubling market share.

Cupra's contribution remains modest, with 287 Tavascans and one Born registered in the first six months of 2026.
