Cummins

Cummins has long been associated with heavy duty diesel powerplants. The firm is now exploring alternatives to that traditional focus. Its latest offering is the B6.7 Octane, a turbocharged inline six displacing 6.7 liters that runs on ordinary 87 octane gasoline rather than diesel fuel.

The engine targets medium duty trucks such as school buses, delivery vans and utility vehicles. One early use will be the 29 foot Peterbilt U Haul EM box truck. Although it burns gasoline, the unit delivers the strong low end pull typical of diesel designs.

Four output ratings are available, from 200 horsepower and 600 lb ft of torque to 300 horsepower and 660 lb ft. Peak torque arrives at 1,800 rpm and the engine continues to 3,200 rpm, figures close to those of its diesel counterpart.

A Jacobs engine brake is also fitted, giving the gasoline motor the same compression release braking found on many diesel trucks.

The B6.7 Octane belongs to Cummins HELM family of engines designed for multiple fuels. The block is an all new design that can later support diesel and hydrogen versions sharing the same basic architecture.

Running on gasoline removes the need for diesel exhaust fluid systems while preserving long service intervals. Oil changes are projected at roughly 15,000 miles.

Fleet operators also gain simplicity. Companies such as U Haul prefer gasoline because most drivers are already familiar with standard fuel pumps and no extra fluids are required.
