The engine sits at the core of any Formula One machine, with several powerplants earning special recognition over the decades. Renault's turbocharged V6 secured 15 victories from 1977 to 1983. Honda's V12 claimed the sole title for that configuration in 1991, driven by Ayrton Senna in the McLaren MP4/6. Among these icons stands a lesser-known supplier that dominated circuits from 1957 to 1963, claiming 18 grand prix wins and delivering constructors' crowns for Cooper in 1959 and 1960.

What sets the Coventry Climax FPF apart is its modest origins as a naturally aspirated four-cylinder unit developed from a stationary fire pump design. The firm started in 1903 under former Daimler engineer Pulham Lee and earned notice by providing tractor power for Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Antarctic venture. Early supplies went to Triumph, Clyno, and Morgan, yet the 1930s economic downturn prompted Leonard Lee to shift focus toward water pumps for survival.

In 1950 the British Ministry of Defense sought lighter pumps with higher flow rates. Coventry Climax responded with the FW engine, a 62-cubic-inch inline-four delivering 38 horsepower at just 180 pounds.

From pumping water to racing at Le Mans

The FW featured an aluminum block and head, single overhead camshaft, and dry cast-iron liners. Three main bearings reduced mass while a balanced cast-iron crankshaft curbed vibration. Government orders for 15,000 units followed, giving Leonard Lee the impetus to display the engine at the 1953 Earls Court show. There it drew interest from Colin Chapman of Lotus and driver Cyril Kieft.

Coventry Climax developed the FWA automotive variant, which Kieft entered at Le Mans in 1954. Though the car retired, the engine proved reliable. Returns in 1955, 1956, and 1957, including a seventh-place finish for Lotus in 1956, confirmed the maker's rising potential in competition.

Earning glory in Formula One and beyond

Coventry Climax tested F2 waters in 1956 before stepping into Formula 1. Stirling Moss scored the first win at the 1958 Argentine Grand Prix aboard a Cooper T43 with the 2.0-liter FPF. Enlarged to 2.5 liters, the engine helped Jack Brabham and Cooper-Climax capture the 1959 drivers' title.

Jim Clark recorded 19 of his 25 grand prix triumphs with Coventry Climax power. The engines also served Cooper, Lotus, Elva, and Lola. A mid-engined Cooper fitted with a 2.75-liter FPF finished ninth at the 1961 Indianapolis 500, marking the first rear-engined car to reach that result. When the V8 era arrived in 1962, the FPF had already achieved legendary status.

Coventry Climax withdrew from Formula 1 after 1965. The company joined British Leyland's Special Products division following mergers and later produced forklifts until receivership in 1986. Even so, the FPF four-cylinder endures in racing history as one of motorsport's most revered engines.
