Ford executive Andrew Frick highlighted interest in the sedan market during a discussion with Automotive News.
He noted that any new sedan would likely fit into an existing Ford vehicle family.
Reports indicate a four-door Mustang concept was presented to dealers two years ago.

Back in 1965, Ford created a four-door Mustang shortly after the model's debut, though it never reached buyers. In the early 1980s, the LTD sedan offered an optional 5.0-liter V-8 shared with the Mustang GT as a clever parts swap. The notion of pairing Mustang spirit with added practicality has lingered since the start, and recent executive comments point to this vision possibly becoming real soon.

In comments to Automotive News, Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick emphasized plans to grow the Mustang range. At present, buyers can choose the classic coupe or convertible with four-cylinder or V-8 power, along with the Mustang Mach-E, which enthusiasts often view as a Mustang by name alone.

Ford engineers have enjoyed developing the Mach-E, especially the Rally version that merges electric crossover traits with Focus RS character. GT models deliver strong speed and crossover utility while outselling the standard two-door Mustang. Yet Frick indicated the brand is exploring other options.

"A portion of buyers still prefer sedans," he explained to AN. "The share is smaller than before, down from 50 percent to around 16 or 17 percent. Our Mustang stands out as a desirable car, and we aim to build on that family going ahead."

Frick further remarked that adding a sedan would need to align with the current lineup and fit within an existing family of models.

With the Mach 4 name trademarked last year, a production Mustang sedan appears increasingly likely. In 2024, Ford reportedly displayed two Mustang variants to dealers: a four-door sedan and a performance off-roader styled like a Mustang version of the 911 Dakar.

The Dakar-inspired Mustang would offer excitement and echo past experiments, including a four-wheel-drive pony car tested in 1965. Still, that remains a specialized offering, while long-time Ford sedan customers now lack options at showrooms. Though 16 or 17 percent of the market is not dominant, it represents real demand, and dealers recognize not every buyer will switch to an Escape or similar crossover.

A four-door Mustang Mach 4 built on an extended platform could quickly compete with the Dodge Charger in the performance sedan space. Adding 5.0-liter V-8 power would appeal to enthusiasts seeking Coyote engine character alongside room for family duties.

The EcoBoost engine could also provide solid performance with distinctive styling that stands apart from typical sedans. A manual transmission might even appear, though expectations should stay measured as these remain ideas for now. Ford has considered four-door Mustangs for decades, and the moment may finally have arrived.
