The forthcoming compact Mercedes-Benz G-Class is slated for production in Hungary instead of its traditional German home. Mercedes plans to boost capacity at its Hungarian plant, positioning it as the company's biggest European production site.

Cost efficiency is key for this more compact and budget-friendly variant. Hungary's reduced labor expenses provide a logical location, fitting for a model positioned under the main G-Wagon in dimensions and cost.

Originally conceived as an all-electric off-roader, Mercedes has shifted plans. The smaller G-Class will now offer hybrid options in addition to the battery-electric model, broadening its market reach.

The electric iteration is anticipated to include an 85 kWh battery and two motors, aiming for a range of approximately 450 miles. Specific power outputs are not yet disclosed, but it should deliver performance true to the G-Class heritage.

For the hybrid powertrain, it may draw from the recent CLA model, combining a 1.5-liter engine with electric support for roughly 208 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, with potential increases for this G-Class variant.

A launch is rumored for as soon as July 13. Despite the production location change, the vehicle is expected to retain the iconic G-Class styling and presence.
