The 1970s proved challenging times for performance enthusiasts. The Clean Air Act of 1970 along with the shift to unleaded fuel curtailed the golden era of high-output muscle cars. Still, whispers circulated about a special model Chrysler was developing. The story claimed that a small group of engineers and line workers slipped a unique and non-compliant vehicle past the gates. For years Chrysler maintained that no such car had been produced. The company position held that the famed 440 Six-Pack engine option ended after 1971. In the end the rumors proved correct.

Among Mopar collectors the 1972 V-Code stood as the ultimate factory myth. Early dealer materials from spring 1971 listed the triple two-barrel carburetor setup for the Road Runner GTX and Dodge Charger. By August the program had been halted. The engine failed to secure EPA emissions approval and production was formally cancelled.

Ten years later dedicated Mopar searcher Russel Morgan visited a North Carolina salvage yard and noticed a worn Rallye Red 1972 Plymouth Road Runner. The car carried unusual factory options including an Air Grabber hood and power sunroof. A quick check of the dashboard data plate revealed a fifth VIN digit of V. In Chrysler coding that letter denoted the 440 Six-Pack.

The EPA compliance issue

Official records and Chrysler statements insisted no 1972 V-Code cars had been built. Yet the data plate showed the vehicle had left the St. Louis plant in early August 1971. Morgan purchased the titled car for 150 dollars. When he later asked a Chrysler executive to confirm the VIN he received a firm denial and was told the car did not exist.

The reason for the strong reaction was clear. Because the 440 Six-Pack never received 1972 EPA certification any public sale would have violated federal rules. Chrysler attempted to bury the episode yet production documents revealed the sequence. The cars were assembled in August 1971 before the cancellation notice reached the line. A few examples therefore escaped.

Physical proof later surfaced. Morgan located 1972-specific Holley carburetors bearing correct factory numbers and date codes for the cancelled program. Blueprints and parts had been prepared and the vehicles themselves had been completed.

The three known survivors

Collectors have now documented three 1972 V-Code cars that left the factory. Morgan's Rallye Red Road Runner GTX remains the best-known example. By 1972 the GTX name had become an option package tied to the 440 engine. This car features its original 330-horsepower engine an automatic transmission and the rare factory sunroof. After a full restoration it entered the Brothers Collection.

The remaining two cars carry Dodge Charger Rallye badging and were also built in that early August window. One Rallye Red example spent years in a salvage yard before moving through East Coast collectors. The second a Top Banana Yellow Charger stayed with one Detroit-area family for decades and was only recently uncovered and verified.

Chrysler spent years insisting the 1972 Six-Pack never reached production. Thanks to persistent research and the evidence of original VIN tags the story has been confirmed as fact.
