China's market regulator has prepared new rules that would tightly restrict fully electric hidden door handles beginning January 1, 2027. Every door must still open during a power loss.

The draft sets a July 1, 2027 filing deadline for models already on sale and explains when a hidden-handle layout could lead to a production stop.

Hidden Door Handle Limits

Starting January 1, 2027, any maker seeking to register a new vehicle design in China must supply extra technical data and safety validation if the design includes an innovative feature, with hidden door handles near the top of the list. The rule focuses on fully flush, power-retracting handles that sit even with the body and extend electronically.

Under the draft, fully electric external handles that rely on power to extend and release would be prohibited. Semi-hidden or recessed designs could remain, yet only when the handle works mechanically and provides a grab area of at least 2.4 inches by 0.8 inch so a hand can pull.

The draft reaches beyond door handles. The same rules would demand physical controls for safety-critical items such as exterior lights, windshield wipers, and defogging, moving those tasks away from touchscreen menus alone.

Vehicles already approved for sale in China are not free from the new rules. Automakers must submit extra technical and validation materials by July 1, 2027 for any certified model. A separate door-handle safety standard grants those in-market vehicles a longer transition window to finish hardware changes.

Mechanical And Testing Compliance

Compliance means more than adding a lever. Reports on the draft list 51 additional parameters regulators want documented for new vehicle registrations, covering structural and software reliability, environmental adaptability, heating and cooling performance, and sealing against water and dust.

Innovative designs must also pass real-world durability testing covering at least 18,600 miles.

That does not mean every car with flush handles will be removed from roads. The production-halt and recall rules apply only to vehicles that miss the documentation deadline and are later shown to carry a genuine safety risk.

The risk falls on automakers that let the July 2027 deadline pass on a model with an undocumented or weakly tested design. In that case, the draft requires an immediate production stop and a recall plan filed with the regulator.
