The power unit beneath your car's hood is an engine, of course. The device turning the propeller on a light aircraft is likewise an engine. Still, the two resemble each other about as much as unrelated machines. This difference makes sense. Your daily driver faces none of the stresses or risks that come with flight, where any engine trouble can quickly become serious.

It follows that piston aircraft engines and car engines vary widely in design. Both rely on internal combustion, consume fuel, follow a stroke cycle, and produce exhaust. Yet airplanes draw on far more of their engine's total output during takeoff and climb than cars use to reach speed.

Beyond power differences, aircraft engines add safety features absent from most cars, including two spark plugs per cylinder and dual magnetos. The higher demands also create distinct service schedules. Few owners would welcome overhauling a typical SUV engine at the intervals required for aircraft powerplants.

Power, lightness, lift

Consider the engine in your car. It draws in air and fuel, ignites the mixture, and expels exhaust in the familiar four-stroke sequence. Piston aircraft engines follow the same basic process but incorporate essential changes for safety, performance, and dependability in flight.

A standard car engine usually runs well below full output in daily driving. An aircraft engine, by contrast, often operates at 70 to 100 percent power during takeoff and climb. Cars typically employ liquid-cooled designs with smaller cylinders, while many light planes use air-cooled engines with larger cylinders to deliver the needed torque at lower speeds.

Aircraft engines also include electrical backups not found in ordinary vehicles. Most cars have one spark plug per cylinder, though some modern engines use more. In planes, dual plugs per cylinder fired by two magnetos provide critical redundancy. Air cooling reduces weight, and the duplicated ignition lessens dependence on the aircraft electrical system.

Different stakes, different maintenance

Some builders do install automotive engines in planes, including occasional LS swaps. Such conversions can sound appealing, yet purpose-built aircraft engines remain the standard choice for certified flight. A car engine may run for high mileage before needing major work, but that same unit would face different expectations when it cannot simply stop at the roadside.

Aircraft piston engines therefore follow stricter maintenance intervals. Manufacturers often set a 2,000-hour time between overhaul. That figure roughly equals 60,000 to 70,000 miles of mixed driving in a car. Reaching such hours without a full rebuild would be unusual for most road engines. Engine trouble in flight carries high costs, and small-plane incidents occur more frequently than many realize.
