Berkeley Lab findings from 2011 show that silver, white, and other pale finishes bounce back roughly 60 percent of incoming sunlight. These hues make it simpler to reach a pleasant cabin temperature, cutting the energy needed for cooling. Darker finishes, by contrast, soak up extra warmth and intensify interior heat buildup.

On a 90-degree Fahrenheit summer afternoon, a closed car can climb to 124 degrees within half an hour. Dark exteriors add to this effect and can raise surrounding city temperatures by about 3.5 degrees. Light-colored vehicles deflect more solar radiation, helping keep interiors cooler than their darker counterparts.

Engines use less fuel when it is warm, yet air conditioning draws extra power

Separate studies on buildings with bright white roofs found they reflect 80 percent of sunlight and stay up to 55 degrees cooler than darker surfaces, trimming cooling energy use by as much as 40 percent. Similar gains appear in vehicles: light paint can improve fuel economy by around 2 percent over dark finishes while cutting carbon dioxide output by nearly 1.9 percent.

The Department of Energy notes that cars generally achieve better mileage in warm weather because thinner air reduces drag. Opening windows at speed, however, increases resistance and can erase those gains. Running the air conditioner instead lowers efficiency by 8 to 10 percent, with comparable or greater effects on hybrids and electric models.

Practical steps to save fuel while driving in heat

At low speeds, windows-down ventilation works well. On highways, close the windows and rely on the air conditioner for better aerodynamics. Pre-cooling the cabin by using a simple door-and-window technique to expel hot air also reduces the load on the system once driving begins.

Monitor tire pressures regularly, since each one-pound drop in inflation cuts mileage by about 0.2 percent. Proper inflation matters more for darker cars. Always follow the vehicle-recommended pressure rather than the maximum listed on the sidewall.

Regular upkeep remains essential in any season. Timely oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and cooling-system service prepare any car for hot-weather demands, no matter the exterior color.
