The Cadillac Lyriq now carries a price tag $32,000 below its initial Australian launch figure from last year, placing the large electric SUV among several premium EVs that have undergone substantial reductions.

Earlier this year the Sport and Luxury variants were lowered to a list price of $90,000 before on-road costs, accompanied by a nationwide drive-away deal at $95,000 that runs until June 30, 2026.

The move follows multiple incentives offered since early 2025 deliveries began, even as EV registrations continue to climb amid elevated fuel costs.

"The market changed markedly from our launch period to the present, both in pricing and competitive dynamics, with fresh brands entering," General Motors Australia and New Zealand managing director Jess Bala explained during the unveiling of the Optiq and Vistiq models.

Although specific names were not mentioned, Chinese marque Zeekr has gained attention since late 2024 deliveries, accelerating with its 7X electric SUV that positions itself as premium yet undercuts the Tesla Model Y and the new Optiq.

"Whenever we enter the market we conduct extensive analysis to determine pricing, reviewing competitor activity, sales forecasts, volume goals and related factors," Bala noted.

"At launch we fully supported the chosen price, yet the team deserves credit for recognizing the shift and adjusting accordingly."

Cadillac first listed the Lyriq at $117,000 before on-roads in 2024, later raising it to $122,000 plus on-roads in 2025, still below rivals such as the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV at that stage.

Bala did not disclose volume targets, and the brand omits monthly sales data unlike other GM entities.

"We maintain internal goals focused on remaining relevant in the luxury segment; to achieve sustained success we needed to respond appropriately," she added.

The revised pricing positions the Lyriq beneath the current Luxury Car Tax threshold of $91,387 for efficient vehicles, qualifying it for Fringe Benefits Tax exemptions under salary packaging schemes.

Numerous luxury marques have expanded offerings below this threshold to attract such buyers, as the Electric Car Discount scheme remains fully active until March 31, 2027.

From April 2027 the full exemption applies only to vehicles at or below $75,000, with higher models under the LCT threshold receiving a 25 percent FBT reduction.

"Over the initial 18 months we have identified the appropriate pricing level, which has varied across the sector," said GM ANZ marketing director Heath Walker.

"Recent BMW announcements on their pricing illustrate that we are not alone in monitoring the broader landscape."

Walker referenced BMW's new entry-level iX3 40 at $89,900 before on-roads, falling under the LCT limit and $20,000 below the 50 xDrive variant.

Other luxury brands have enacted even steeper cuts, including Lexus reductions of up to $42,059 on the RZ, Volvo adjustments of up to $11,300 on the EX30 and EX40, and BMW price drops on the iX1 and iX2.
