The BYD V9 has surfaced in Australian government certification files, hinting at the Chinese manufacturer's re-entry into the commercial van category - this time featuring a far bigger option.

This electric V9 qualifies as a full-size delivery van, with dimensions of 6995mm in length, 2096mm in width, and 2780mm in height, built on a 4550mm wheelbase.

Those specs surpass even the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, at 6967mm long, 2020mm wide, and up to 2778mm tall with a 4325mm wheelbase.

A compact edition measuring 5995mm long exists in Europe, yet it does not appear in Australia's approval records.

Local documents indicate the incoming V9 will pack a single 150kW rear electric motor, a 1330kg payload, and 1500kg braked towing capacity.

Configurations include two- or three-seat setups, though battery size remains unspecified.

Primarily targeted at Europe, the V9 debuted in Germany during September 2024 as the E-Vali.

Besides the rear-wheel-drive variant in Australian filings, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup adds a 100kW front motor.

Every version comes with choices of 80.64kWh or 126kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, supporting up to 22kW AC and 188kW DC charging. WLTP range spans 220km to 250km.

The extended-wheelbase E-Vali provides 17.9 cubic meters of cargo space, compared to 13.9 cubic meters in the regular-wheelbase model.

BYD Australia has not yet verified plans for the V9 locally, but its presence in approval documents strongly suggests arrival. Models rarely skip launch after expensive Australian Design Rule certification.

If launched, the BYD V9 would compete against the Ford E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, and Renault Master E-Tech.

BYD's prior vans in Australia were the T3 models. A small batch of these electric vans arrived in 2021 via the brand's former independent distributor Nexport, available through the EVDirect site.

This week, certification papers for BYD's M9 people mover also emerged on the government portal.

BYD continues aggressive growth in its Australian range, adding the Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 plug-in hybrid SUVs in medium and large sizes, alongside the Seal 6 sedan and wagon. The lineup now spans 11 models as it climbs sales rankings following eighth place last year.
