BYD achieved strong results at the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards, securing two category victories and earning finalist recognition for a third model.

This outcome builds on the brand's solid debut in the prior year's awards, where four vehicles reached the finals without claiming any top prizes.

In the latest event the new Atto 1 electric hatch defeated the GAC Aion V and MG 4 to win Best Affordable EV, while the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV beat the GWM Haval H6 PHEV and MG HS Super Hybrid for Best Affordable PHEV SUV.

The Shark 6 plug-in hybrid dual-cab finished a close second for Best Electrified Ute despite not taking the overall award.

These three models showcase the breadth of BYD's expanding Australian range, from the smallest and most affordable Atto 1 through the mid-size Sealion 6 to the largest and priciest Shark 6.

After initially offering only electric vehicles the company has added popular plug-in hybrids, and this winning group reflects both powertrain types.

The Atto 1 drew attention on its late-2025 arrival thanks to a $23,990 starting price before on-road costs that made it Australia's cheapest electric car.

Yet its appeal extends well beyond the low price tag.

CarExpert founder Alborz Fallah described the Atto 1 Premium as the kind of EV Australia needs more of, citing its affordability, efficiency, ease of use in the city, quiet cabin, comfort and solid build quality for the money.

The Sealion 6 earned its win amid rising competition in the mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV segment, where it launched in 2024 and helped drive stronger sales volumes.

Its smooth efficient powertrains, roomy comfortable cabin and prices from $42,990 to $52,990 before on-roads impressed judges even against newer lower-priced rivals.

Marketplace editor James Wong noted that even the entry-level version feels refined with strong performance, useful technology and generous space for families.

The Shark 6 has also proved highly popular since its early-2025 launch, leading sales in the PHEV ute segment despite finishing runner-up to the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.

Road test editor Ben Zachariah highlighted its ability to serve as both a capable work vehicle and comfortable family transport while keeping running costs low.

Further variants including a more powerful Performance model arrived after voting closed, so their impact will be assessed in future awards.

With BYD continuing to grow its lineup rapidly and climb the sales charts, additional trophies appear likely in coming years.
