The BYD Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid has been confirmed for Australia, with plans to arrive alongside the electric model of the small SUV later this year.

BYD Australia has launched an Expressions of Interest page on its site for the Atto 2 DM-i ahead of its anticipated debut before September ends.

While pricing and local specs remain under wraps, the Atto 2 EV begins at $31,990 before on-road costs, suggesting the DM-i could emerge as Australia's lowest-priced PHEV.

The Sealion 5 from BYD currently holds that position, starting from $33,990 before on-road costs.

A BYD Australia spokesperson noted that the Atto 2 DM-i aligns well with buyers seeking an affordable, practical and stylish SUV.

The spokesperson added that the model shows strong potential, as the Atto 2 already appeals to many and the Super Hybrid addition will expand options for customers.

The electric Atto 2 has achieved 6615 sales year-to-date, with 1214 units delivered in July 2026, ranking it third among BYD Australia's models behind the Sealion 7 electric SUV and Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute.

The Atto 2 DM-i debuted in October 2025 and is available in right-hand drive in the United Kingdom, starting from £26,995 drive-away, about £3000 below the Sealion 5.

The UK lineup includes Active and Boost variants at £26,995 and £29,990 drive-away respectively.

Both feature front-wheel drive with a 72kW/122Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired to a 145kW/300Nm electric motor, though battery sizes differ.

The entry-level Active delivers combined outputs of 122kW and 300Nm using a 7.8kWh Blade LFP battery for 39km electric range and 928km total range under WLTP.

The Boost raises system output to 156kW with the same torque, adding an 18kWh Blade LFP battery for quicker charging, 89km electric range and 999km total range.

BYD states the Boost reaches 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds, which is 1.6 seconds faster than the Active and 0.4 seconds quicker than the Australian Atto 2 EV.

Kerb weights for UK models are 1510kg for Active and 1620kg for Boost, versus 1555kg for the local Atto 2 EV, with both UK versions including a 45-litre fuel tank.

Standard Active equipment covers 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, cloth upholstery, a reversing camera and a 12.8-inch touchscreen with Google Built-in plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Boost adds 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminium roof rails, privacy glass, vegan leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, black or beige interiors, a panoramic fixed glass roof, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera and vehicle-to-load capability.

An expanded Atto 2 range may strengthen BYD Australia's position after the brand secured second place overall for the third straight month in July 2026, the best result for any Chinese marque.

This growth has allowed BYD to surpass Kia in year-to-date sales, placing second behind Toyota with Ford third and Kia fourth.
