During the 1920s Henry Ford sought to secure his own rubber supply by establishing a production settlement deep in the Amazon. He obtained 2.5 million acres along the Tapajos River in Para with the agreement to share a modest share of yearly earnings with Brazilian authorities after a dozen years. The resulting community aimed to replicate American ideals complete with utilities a medical facility and power yet it imposed strict moral codes and rigid timetables on local workers.
