BMW is completing development of the next X5 ahead of its launch in the coming weeks. Though prototypes remain covered, official images from the German brand highlight a major profile update. Door handles sit integrated into the beltline rather than in their usual spots.

This layout appeared earlier on the Ford Mustang Mach-E, yet the new X5 extends it with winglets on the rear doors too. The official debut will clarify the choice, but several factors stand out. Neue Klasse styling emphasizes simplicity, and concealing the handles creates a smoother side view.

Aerodynamic gains may also factor in, especially for the first iX5 electric model. It will carry the biggest battery yet for any BMW, rated at 141 kWh usable in Europe and 144 kWh in the United States. The winglets may aid airflow even though pop-out handles already help efficiency.

BMW Tested This Layout On Special Models First

The 2027 X5 becomes the first regular production car with the updated handles, but earlier BMWs tried the idea. The Skytop, built on the M8 as a two-door convertible with a removable targa roof, debuted the hidden handles. The Speedtop shooting brake follows soon after. Both stay exclusive, limited to 50 and 70 units respectively.

The next X7, expected in 2027, will include electrically operated winglet handles based on tested prototypes. The future X6 arriving in 2028 could follow suit to refine its coupe-SUV shape. All three large X models will add battery electric versions for the first time.

Door Handle Designs Keep Evolving

BMW recently adjusted door handles on the iX3 and i3 for China after new safety rules required a shift from pop-out to semi-enclosed styles. The new X5, coded G65 internally, will offer five powertrain choices for the first time. These include gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, the iX5 electric, and a hydrogen model due in 2028.

BMW previously built hydrogen cars without customer sales. The iX5 Hydrogen will launch with Toyota support to show hydrogen remains viable alongside battery focus from most makers.

Motor1's Take: BMW likely has practical reasons for the change beyond looks alone. The glossy winglets should become less obvious without camouflage by blending with the beltline. Buyers will probably accept the design since conventional handles are unlikely. Separate door panels would raise costs and complexity. It is still unclear if the long-wheelbase X5 for China will keep the winglets or use standard handles instead.
