Although BMW remains a flagship German marque, a large share of its lineup now carries South Carolina origins. The Spartanburg plant opened in 1994 and has grown into a major industrial hub, turning out more than 7 million vehicles across three decades. The site currently ships roughly 200,000 units worldwide each year, generating $9 billion in value for 2025 and accounting for about half of BMW's total U.S. output. Last year the company ranked as the leading American automotive exporter.

In a market dominated by SUVs, most of BMW's crossovers are assembled domestically. The facility produces 1,500 examples daily of the X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM. The 11,000 workers once concentrated on sedans and roadsters such as the 318i and Z3. Consequently, the majority of BMW vehicles sold in the United States are built on American soil despite the brand's European roots.

Current U.S. production: BMW X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM

The X5 holds the longest continuous production record at the plant, with assembly beginning in 1999 for the 2000 model year. At the time, BMW sought to match rivals Mercedes ML and Lexus RX. The present X5 belongs to the fourth generation (G05). Shared architecture led naturally to U.S. production of the X6, which debuted for 2008 alongside the second-generation X5.

The X3 initially came from Austria and other sites after its 2004 launch. Spartanburg later added capacity for the second-generation model starting in 2011. Third-generation production from 2018 has been shared among global plants, yet the X3 became BMW's top seller in 2023. American output continues with the 2025 model that opens the fourth generation.

Although the X5 offered optional third-row seating for years (a feature removed in 2024), it could not match the interior space of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. BMW addressed the gap with the three-row X7, introduced for 2019 and built in South Carolina from the start. While the X7 leads in overall size, the XM claims flagship pricing for 2026 at $160,775 including destination. The model accelerates to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds using 738 horsepower from a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 combined with a plug-in hybrid system.

Past U.S. production: BMW 318i, Z3, Z4

SUVs now dominate output, yet earlier decades featured different vehicles. The first car to leave the line in 1994 was an Alpine White 318i sedan. Its 1.8-liter four-cylinder produced 138 horsepower, modest by modern standards and below the 149 horsepower of the 2026 Nissan Sentra. Enthusiasts still value the rear-wheel-drive layout and standard five-speed manual. Production concluded after 1996.

The 318i's exit cleared space for the Z3 roadster, BMW's first model built outside Germany. Output began with the 1996 model year, again delivering 138 horsepower though from a 1.9-liter engine. A quirky hatchback variant joined for 1999. By the final 2002 model year, inline-six choices included a 2.5-liter unit rated at 184 horsepower or an optional 3.0-liter engine producing 225 horsepower.

The plant also assembled the Z4, successor to the Z3. Launched for 2003, the roadster carried over the same six-cylinder engines. For 2006 the 2.5-liter option was dropped in favor of two 3.0-liter variants rated at 215 or 255 horsepower. U.S. Z4 production ended with the 2008 model year. Second-generation assembly moved to Germany the following year to free capacity for additional X models in South Carolina.
