The 3 Series represents BMW's signature sedan, yet for nearly a decade it also appeared in hatchback guise. The initial 3 Series Compact acted as the 1 Series predecessor, delivering a compact and accessible route to BMW ownership while preserving rear-wheel drive. Even so, although the E36/5 Compact debuted with three doors, Munich explored the addition of two more.

BMW has now extracted a secretive five-door prototype from storage, unveiling an odd chapter of its past that never reached buyers. This unassuming 316i Compact represents an experimental E36/5 model fitted with extra rear doors on the familiar hatchback shape. In contrast to the well-known three-door version, this singular prototype stayed hidden for decades until BMW Classic presented it publicly.

The vehicle began in Boston Green with fabric upholstery, an automatic gearbox, and heated seats. It has since received a red repaint, yet odd features indicate it was never meant as a finished showroom car. Notably, it features manual crank windows even though electric switches sit on the console, underscoring its test-bed status.

BMW's Five-Door Hatchback Idea That Stayed Shelved

BMW has not explained the decision against production, though added expense offers a likely reason. Incorporating rear doors would have demanded further development and tooling for a model focused on low cost. A five-door layout would also have competed directly with the standard 3 Series sedan and Touring, both already serving buyers seeking greater utility.

The follow-up 3 Series Compact from the early 2000s, known as the E46/5, likewise omitted rear doors. Production lasted only three years, and BMW never offered it in North America after weak sales of the prior model. The firm apparently feared limited demand and chose not to import it.

BMW waited until 2004 to launch a factory five-door hatchback with the E87 1 Series. That model continued the Compact's role by supplying a smaller, practical option to the 3 Series sedan with rear-wheel drive intact. First released as a five-door, it gained a three-door variant in 2007. Viewed today, the overlooked E36/5 prototype appears as an early test of an approach BMW would adopt a decade later.

The Additional E36/5 Model That Missed Production

Enthusiasts will recall another distinctive 3 Series from the E36/5 period. The lead photo shows the rare M3 Compact, which also failed to reach production alongside the five-door 316i. BMW preserved both rather than discarding them. While the M3 Compact has attracted notice previously, the newly shown 316i stands out more because its existence remained largely unknown.

Both vehicles connect spiritually to the 1 Series and its M Performance counterpart. Yet the current M135i differs markedly, relying on a front-wheel-drive base and standard xDrive. Earlier models used rear-wheel-drive layouts, as did nearly all BMWs before the 2014 arrival of the front-wheel-drive 2 Series Active Tourer.

This find raises questions about further one-off prototypes stored by BMW. Beyond officially displayed concepts, other experiments may have remained in workshops. A more practical Compact was evidently considered long ago, prompting curiosity about additional ideas the brand rejected.

Somewhere in Munich, an even bolder M model or fresh interpretation of a familiar name may await discovery. Although the 3 Series Compact ranks among BMW's less celebrated lines, this five-door prototype shows that even modest chapters hold intriguing untold stories.
