Although few view the X5 as a dedicated trail machine, the previous version offered an Off-Road Package with air suspension, a locking rear differential, skid plates, and all-terrain tires. That setup proved more than sufficient for the vast majority of buyers, so engineers did not emphasize greater ruggedness in the 2027 G65 X5.

At the model launch, BMW Luxury Class senior vice president Philip Koehn told reporters that further off-road improvements were not a priority. He explained that the team had already expanded performance across every area and that the new X5 ranks as the most capable version yet produced.

Very few BMW owners venture off pavement, yet the X5 remains ready when needed. The brand's Spartanburg Performance Driving School includes an off-road loop that highlights the vehicle's abilities. Drivers who tested the Silver Anniversary Edition with the Off-Road Package on that course found it performed well beyond expectations.

BMW may have skipped added capability because a purpose-built off-roader is reportedly in the works. Codenamed G74 internally, the vehicle is expected to rival the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class if approved for production, with a possible debut in late 2028 and sales beginning around 2029.

Motor1 Analysis: The X5 surpasses what most buyers require away from pavement, and the earlier Off-Road Package already went further than average customers needed. Any future BMW off-roader would likely feature unique bodywork tailored specifically for rough terrain rather than adapting the X5 platform.
