Chinese luxury automaker Avatr has been spotted testing its 07 mid-size SUV in Australia, and the company has now unveiled images of a longer variant of this electric and extended-range electric vehicle.

The brand, backed by a 41 per cent stake from Changan - the parent of Deepal - shared the debut official photos of the 07L on Chinese social media platforms, offering scant additional details.

It retains the identical front-end design as the standard 07, featuring what Avatr describes as a "UFO-inspired front face," along with bold haunches, a less sloping tailgate, and a more subdued rear styling.

The 07L looks noticeably extended compared to the regular 07, which spans 4825mm in length, 1980mm in width, and up to 1620mm in height on a 2940mm wheelbase - positioning it 33mm longer, 2mm narrower, and 4mm lower than the Tesla Model Y while boasting a 50mm longer wheelbase.

A right-hand drive Avatr 07 was recently photographed in Melbourne's Point Cook suburb by enthusiast Matthew Gough. It wore heavy external camouflage but revealed much of its interior.

Changan reportedly signalled last year that Avatr would enter the Australian market, though the local distributor remains unconfirmed.

Deepal is managed by Inchcape, the same group behind Subaru, Peugeot, and Foton. Inchcape declined to comment when queried about potentially distributing Avatr in Australia.

Avatr, closely partnered with tech powerhouse Huawei, began vehicle production in 2022 and has introduced a fresh model annually since - all equipped with pure-electric (EV) or extended-range electric (EREV) drivetrains.

Both the 07 and the somewhat bigger, coupe-styled 11 are already built in right-hand drive configurations for regions like Hong Kong and Singapore.

In Australia, the 07 could challenge the Zeekr 7X and upscale electric SUVs including the Audi Q6 e-tron, Lexus RZ, and Cadillac Optiq.

The pure-electric model packs an 82.16kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, an 800V architecture, and a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 252kW of power and 365Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds with a 650km range under the CLTC testing cycle.

In Hong Kong and Singapore, a dual-motor all-wheel drive option offers combined 440kW and 645Nm, with 545km range on the NEDC cycle - 30km shy of the rear-drive model.

The EREV variant pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 39.05kWh LFP battery and a 231kW/333Nm electric motor.

It tips the scales at a lighter 2225kg versus 2315kg for the EV, but requires 6.6 seconds for 0-100km/h.

All 07 models employ double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, Continental brake-by-wire tech, and 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels. The AWD 07 Ultra EV includes self-levelling air suspension with adaptive damping.

Frameless doors with soft-close operation reveal a 35.4-inch full-width display as the cabin highlight. A 15.6-inch screen angles toward the driver, powered by Huawei's HarmonyOS Cockpit interface.

Highlights include a digital rear-view mirror, panoramic glass roof with electric shade, ambient lighting, 50W wireless charging, a 16-speaker 1408W Meridian audio setup, heated and adjustable steering wheel, and 16-way power front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions.

Three millimetre-wave radars, 10 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors enable the Huawei Qiankun ADS SE advanced driver assistance system.

Standard active safety covers remote parking, surround-view cameras with transparent chassis view, front/rear cross-traffic alerts, and Level 2+ autonomy.

Avatr's heavy reliance on Huawei software prompts speculation about modifications for Australia, where the firm faces restrictions on its 5G equipment.

Changan products are already on sale here, from Deepal's E07 Multitruck and S07 to upcoming Mazda dealership offerings.

The Chinese firm collaborates with Mazda on the forthcoming 6e electric sedan and CX-6e electric SUV via their joint venture.

Avatr's entry will bolster the ranks of upscale Chinese brands, as manufacturers from the global auto leader shift beyond budget-friendly models.

BYD has begun Denza deliveries this year, while Geely's Zeekr scores hits with the 7X mid-size electric SUV and plans pricier crossovers for Australia.
