Australian carbon-fibre wheel producer Carbon Revolution accumulated losses totaling $347 million across four years and entered insolvency in December 2025 due to the steep expenses of manufacturing in Australia, a location distant from its primary global customers, as detailed in a report from accounting firm McGrathNicol.

The Australian Financial Review notes that the Geelong-headquartered firm, which provided lightweight wheels to prestigious automakers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar Land Rover, and Ford, identified elevated local production costs as a critical contributor to its financial struggles.

The company entered administration in March 2026, with McGrathNicol tasked to oversee a potential restructuring. The firm has now disclosed the substantial deficits racked up by the Victorian operation, which continues to support 350 jobs.

The administrators' report pinpointed "extremely high annual operating losses and cash outflows, coupled with insufficient wheel order volumes to offset trading deficits and reach profitability," as the core drivers of the downturn.

McGrathNicol highlighted Carbon Revolution's Australian base as a significant drag on finances, labeling the country a "high-cost environment" relative to international competitors.

Under a restructuring plan proposed by US shareholder Orion Infrastructure, creditors owed $13 million could recover only 33.7 to 49.7 cents per dollar, the report indicated.

Established in 2007, Carbon Revolution emerged as an Australian export triumph by pioneering one-piece carbon-fibre wheels - up to 40 percent lighter than traditional alloy versions.

However, recent setbacks from automaker deals falling through, particularly cancellations of electric vehicle programs where weight reduction boosts range, severely impacted the business.

Despite achieving 87 percent revenue growth to US$47.3 million (A$65.4 million) for the year ended June 2024, the company has since posted losses surpassing US$146 million (A$201.8 million).

Administrators confirmed total losses of $347 million from July 1, 2022, onward.

These deficits hampered further investment, and despite interest from 145 prospective buyers, no viable rescue emerged.

In a March statement, the company affirmed: "Carbon Revolution’s Australian operations will persist during administration, fulfilling production schedules, completing deliveries, and advancing new product development.

"The restructured entity is expected to relaunch in Q2 [April-June] 2026, equipped with the capital and market stance to pursue its strategic objectives."
