UPDATE: Audi confirmed to Motor1 that the new A6 Allroad reaches the United States next year.

More than a year after the A6 Avant debut Audi now presents the Allroad version. The rugged wagon follows the established approach with raised suspension and standard Quattro. Yet one detail stands out. The model gains a wider body a characteristic once limited to the RS6.

The new Allroad resembles an A6 Avant on elevated supports. Audi raises ground clearance by 34 millimeters over the standard wagon. The body also expands by 111 millimeters making this the first Allroad with a sturdier profile than the base model.

Both axles widen to fit wheels up to 21 inches with 285/35 tires. For lighter off-road use the standard 19-inch wheels carry 265/45 tires while 20-inch alloys use 275/40 rubber. Audi states the tires exceed prior widths.

Standard All-Wheel Steering

Like all-wheel drive rear-wheel steering arrives as standard equipment. It angles the rear wheels up to 5 degrees at low speeds for better handling. At higher speeds the wheels align with the front pair for improved stability. Audi fits adaptive air suspension tuned for Allroad use.

Audi offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain in an Allroad model for the first time. It pairs a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor for 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The setup accelerates the A6 Allroad to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The A6 Allroad E-Hybrid uses a 20.7-kWh battery for 59 miles of electric range under the WLTP combined cycle. AC charging at up to 11 kW restores the battery in two and a half hours.

The Diesel Engine Continues

Buyers preferring a conventional powertrain can select the 3.0-liter V6 TDI with mild-hybrid assistance and claims of no turbo lag. The engine delivers 295 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque for a 0 to 62 mph time of 5.4 seconds and the same 155 mph top speed.

Audi plans to deliver the new A6 Allroad to European dealerships this fall. In Germany prices begin at 77250 euros for the diesel and reach 80250 euros for the plug-in hybrid.

Motor1's Take: The Allroad continues as the ultimate single-vehicle solution from Audi able to handle nearly any task. Unless an RS6 Allroad appears this model would rank as our top choice in the Audi range. Still the absence of a pure gasoline engine in Europe disappoints though the diesel and plug-in hybrid should satisfy most buyers.

We remain unconvinced by the glossy black accents since a matte finish would better match the A6 Allroad rugged nature. The same issue affects the piano black interior trim which attracts fingerprints easily.
