Audi certainly caught everyone off guard with the recent launch of what serves as the R8 successor. Despite its concept-like appearance, the Nuvolari represents the actual vehicle that affluent buyers can expect starting in early 2027. While limited to 499 examples, hints of a convertible variant are already emerging.

In a discussion with Top Gear magazine, CEO Gernot Döllner addressed whether plans exist to produce 499 units of a Nuvolari Spyder. Although he denied matching that exact figure, his comments focused solely on quantity and effectively confirmed development of an open-top version. It makes sense that Audi would equip its most potent model with a folding roof, especially since the related Lamborghini Temerario will also offer Spyder bodywork.

The CEO's remarks imply that any Nuvolari Spyder would follow its own production schedule. Audi would likely build fewer units and apply a higher price than the coupe, which begins at 600,000 euros in Germany. Although details remain unconfirmed, the executive's words point toward an unspecified quantity of convertibles moving forward.

Fabric Roof Or Targa Top?

Details on the roof mechanism remain unclear, though the prior R8 Spyder used a fabric design. Last year's Concept C introduced a targa-style hardtop that stores electrically behind the seats, marking a first for Audi. The upcoming production version of the smaller electric sports car arrives in 2027 and will feature only this configuration, with no fixed-roof coupe planned.

Although the Nuvolari carries a restricted build total, Audi has not confirmed whether the production Concept C will also serve as a limited-run model. Both vehicles introduce a new unified design theme along with revised cabin layouts that emphasize premium materials and more traditional controls.

Audi continues to accept orders for the Nuvolari coupe where budgets permit. The plug-in hybrid V8 will reach the United States, yet specific pricing stays undisclosed. Global allocation of the 499 units also remains undecided, with further information expected later this year.

The Nuvolari shares connections with the Temerario, just as next year's Concept C will link to the electric Boxster and Cayman. The 718 EV models remain on track.
