The seller of this Nice Price or No Dice VW Cabriolet states it comes with all the bells and whistles plus almost no rust. With that mix of claims in mind, we will examine its price as summer fun draws near.

When new, the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T Spyder reviewed last Friday stood as the more budget-friendly option in Mitsubishi's lineup of sports cars. The pricier choice was the 3000 GT. Value matters greatly in the used car scene, which made the Eclipse's $21,500 asking price tough for many to accept. Even with its strong presentation, mostly original state, and claimed low mileage, most voters felt no Eclipse deserved that sum. The tally showed an 83 percent No Dice result for the capable Mitsubishi.

It is mid-June, so Spirit Halloween shops are appearing in empty retail spaces nationwide. Yet eager as they seem, ample time remains to savor summer sunshine.

What better way to enjoy a warm-weather cruise than in a comfy convertible like this 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio alongside good friends? Volkswagen captured that spirit in a dreamy TV ad for the model, pairing it with Nick Drake's lovely Pink Moon track. The commercial was helmed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, who later directed the movie Little Miss Sunshine.

That background makes this Cabrio appealing to romantics and VW enthusiasts. It appears to be in very good, well-kept condition, leaving little room for complaint. Still, we can likely spot a few issues.

Safety in (low) numbers

We could fairly question the engine under the Cabrio's hood. It is Volkswagen's reliable SOHC 8-valve 2.0-liter inline-four. In U.S. form it produces a modest 113 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. Those figures will not excite anyone or land the car in any scrapes. On the bright side, it pairs with a five-speed manual featuring Volkswagen's familiar vague shifter.

Another idea is that Volkswagens resemble Legos, so stronger engines such as turbo 1.8s or VR6s can swap in easily. Jason Cammisa at Hagerty, who calls himself a Highly Influential Automotive Journalist (Also, an idiot), has installed a 2.8-liter VR6 in his MKIII Golf Cabriolet and made it function.

There is no disgrace in keeping the ordinary four-cylinder, especially since the seller reports it stays in excellent shape. Recent service includes a new timing belt, radiator, alternator, and A/C compressor. Oil changes occur every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, and the car is stored indoors between evening drives. The tires show some age but do not demand immediate replacement.

Top of the line

All that care has produced a vehicle that looks solid despite its 124,782 miles and reportedly runs without problems. This is the top GLX trim, so it includes power windows and locks plus leather on the seats. It is also an unusual transitional model blending a Mark IV front end and trunk lid with a Mark III body and cabin. That detail offers little excitement but can fill conversation at gatherings.

The convertible top serves as the main attraction. When lowered it rests partly above the trunk, though less obtrusively than on earlier Golf convertibles or the old Beetle. The ad notes a fresh tonneau cover to protect it when stowed. The signature basket-handle B-pillar is a classic Cabrio trait and positions seatbelts so they do not press against front occupants.

The listing warns of almost no body rust. The car is located in Minnesota, a state known for heavy road salt that quickly damages vehicles. No rust shows in the photos, yet a thorough inspection is wise before any purchase.

Compare and contrast

If rust proves minor, attention can turn to the clean title and then the $8,000 price. That sum could buy several similar convertibles, such as Mustang drop-tops or GM J-body models. Each option carries strengths and weaknesses, just like this VW. The key question is whether its traits justify the $8,000 figure. For reference, a comparable GLS sold for $12,715 on Bring a Trailer in 2022.

With these points in mind, is this Cabrio a solid buy at $8,000? Or must the seller adjust the price to enjoy an empty driveway this summer?
