Today's featured car often appears on lists of the world's worst vehicles, yet that label overlooks its potential. We will examine whether this later version overcomes the flaws of earlier models and offers a worthwhile buy.

In 1993, French authorities passed the Bread Law to set standards for ingredients and methods in making certain breads, especially the baguette. The goal was to shield consumers from low-quality items while preserving the cultural value tied to each loaf.

It is unclear how many baguettes might fit in the 1982 Renault R5 reviewed earlier this week, but at $15,500 the purchase would leave little room for extras. That quirky and rare supermini appealed to a specific owner, and none of us fit the profile, leading to a 92 percent no vote.

An Italian E30

France excels at producing lively and unconventional small cars but has not built a strong presence in the supercar arena. For that level of performance we turn to Italy, where such machines are crafted with skill.

Our focus today is not a supercar but a volume-produced near-luxury coupe from a brand once famous for high-performance models that faced challenges by the late 1970s. The marque is Maserati and the vehicle is a 1987 Biturbo Si.

Created during Alejandro de Tomaso's ownership, the Biturbo aimed to deliver an accessible upscale car that could rival the BMW 3 Series and generate essential revenue. Early sales were strong, yet they declined sharply once reports of reliability and build quality surfaced. Initial engines used carburetors that caused problems inside the twin-turbo plenum. The 1987 shift to Weber Marelli fuel injection resolved many concerns and raised output across engine sizes. Here the DOHC intercooled unit pairs with a dog-leg five-speed ZF manual that sends power to the rear wheels.

Review the Listing

The seller urges buyers to examine the full description and notes substantial engine work to prevent surprises. Tasks completed include new timing belts, a water pump, ignition leads, and spark plugs. A large aluminum radiator was added to address the model's known overheating tendency.

The car now runs strongly and shows 61,042 miles. It is described as free of rust and major body damage. Brakes are reported in solid condition, and the tires on original alloys retain good tread. As an Si model it carries a body kit with rocker extensions and a large rear spoiler. Additional details include matte window trim and Maserati emblems on the rear pillars.

Accepting Strengths and Weaknesses

Although mechanically solid, the Biturbo has several quirks. The air conditioning system, which uses R12 refrigerant, does not work, most likely from lost charge. Power windows present problems, though the seller has the motors needed for repairs. A sunroof switch also requires attention, yet the roof remains closed so the fix is not urgent. A parasitic battery drain exists, and the seller has not yet identified its source.

Other concerns are mainly cosmetic and confined to the interior. The dashboard and door caps show fading and peeling, as does some of the walnut trim. The driver's seat bolster has lost most of its suede from years of use. The rear seat remains in better shape and reveals an amusing layout: three belts are present, but the deeply contoured outer positions leave little space for a center passenger.

The Maserati Appeal

The Biturbo has long been the target of jokes and listed among regrettable automotive choices. Much of that criticism is undeserved, and as a classic Italian car with history it may now be gaining respect. The seller is parting with it due to an excess of vehicles and has set the price at $5,800, calling it fair given the condition.

We will evaluate that claim. That is the purpose of this exercise.
