Over the years, I have attended numerous classic car events, cars-and-coffee gatherings, and brand-specific rallies. Yet, I have never encountered a dedicated classic pickup truck show, and now I am intrigued by the idea. Full-size pickups have long dominated sales for Detroit's Big Three, delivering diverse styles and variants perfect for enthusiasts to study and remember.

For anyone aiming to join such an event rather than observe, Tuesday's 1993 Ford F-150 XL could have been a strong candidate. Described as turn-key and in near-mint condition, its $12,000 price proved too steep, resulting in a 57 percent 'No Dice' rejection.

Spirit (not the airline)

The term 'spirit' entered English via Old French esperit, derived from Latin spīritus, connoting breath or bravery.

In modern usage, it evokes energy, ghosts, or certain liquors. Automotively, both AMC and Dodge employed the name for unrelated vehicles.

This 1993 Dodge Spirit ES represents Dodge's version. AMC's prior Spirit was an 1980s Gremlin-derived hatchback. Chrysler acquired the name when purchasing AMC from Renault, primarily for Jeep.

Riding the enhanced AA platform - an evolution of the K-Car - the Spirit competed with the Plymouth Acclaim and Chrysler LeBaron in the midsize segment. Front-wheel drive only, it offered inline-four engines (naturally aspirated or turbo), plus a Mitsubishi V6, paired with five-speed manuals or three-speed automatics.

Reality check

It carries a colorful history. Key concerns include a faulty cam cover. Recent shop advice for a new head gasket on the 2.5-liter four-cylinder led to a snapped stud and minor exhaust leak. These fixes should be straightforward, weekend jobs. The seller mentions a slight power dip from the leak - critical for its modest 100 horsepower.

Additional woes: needs two keys after a break-in rekeyed doors and ignition (trunk retains original). A drooping headliner completes the list.

Vintage fun

Not everything requires attention. Since ownership, the seller installed new brakes, timing belt, radiator, and addressed the head gasket.

Exterior appears solid: fair paint with light scratches, attractive factory alloys with caps intact. Its design blends K-Car boxiness with subtle aero tweaks, predating later rounded styles.

Interior shines brighter. Beyond headliner sag, it dazzles in maroon with striped velour seats that look plush. This year's model has a driver airbag sans the 1994 passenger belt. Clean title eases ownership transfer.

The cheap seats?

The seller juggles multiple cars, prioritizing others over this regularly started, neighborhood-driven Spirit. Ideally, it goes to a Mopar fan to sort issues and appreciate its character.

This targets a niche: Spirits were not built for collectibility, and its underuse plus heavy past handling make it eccentric. At $2,500, debate ensues.
