35,450. That is the total number of A110s produced since the original launched in 1969. The majority come from the second generation introduced in 2017, which concluded assembly just days ago with the 28,701st car finished in Dieppe. As the saying goes, out with the old and in with the new. Renault's performance division is already previewing the third-generation model, though it will not serve as a direct successor.

Currently called the A110 Future, the development vehicle functions as a test mule. The turbocharged 1.8-liter gasoline engine mounted behind the seats has been removed. Alpine is swapping the four-cylinder unit, which originated from the Megane RS hot hatch, for a dual-motor configuration while preserving the rear-wheel-drive layout. This goes well beyond a simple electric swap of the prior model. It represents an entirely new project built on the Alpine Performance Platform (APP).

It already appears recognizable because development prototypes often combine old and new components. Yet the top view reveals significantly wider wheel arches, indicating stronger front and rear axles ahead. Beneath the surface sit two rear-mounted battery packs in a split arrangement to deliver a 40:60 weight distribution. Although Alpine avoids discussing overall weight, there are grounds for optimism.

The battery employs high-energy-density cells, so the pack should avoid excessive mass. Still, the new A110 is unlikely to approach the remarkably low curb weight of its predecessor at 1,102 kilograms (2,430 pounds). Even if it ends up heavier, that has not stopped Alpine from promoting the next A110 enthusiastically.

The company states it will be the world's first true EV sports car and will possess the capability to outperform the finest combustion sports cars available today. The pair of electric motors is said to provide exceptional torque and performance.

Because the next-generation A110 remains in early stages, Alpine is withholding most technical details. It does confirm that the performance EV will use fully aluminum suspension to manage weight. The platform itself is aluminum-intensive, and the battery adopts a cell-to-pack design with cells integrated directly into one large unit.

It will also incorporate a silicon carbide (SiC) inverter for improved efficiency and higher power density in a lighter package. Alpine has verified an 800-volt electrical architecture to support ultra-fast charging. While the A110 will stay a strict two-seater like earlier versions, plans already exist for a larger 2+2 model reviving the A310 nameplate last seen in 1984.

After its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next week, the updated A110 is scheduled to launch in 2027.

Motor1's Take: Alpine makes some bold claims about the A110, especially regarding its ability to outperform combustion-engine sports cars. That may prove accurate, yet enthusiasts might favor a slower, lighter sports car equipped with a gasoline engine and all the character it brings. Although the prior turbocharged 1.8-liter engine was not a benchmark, the previous A110 achieved remarkably low weight. The upcoming EV will probably not match that achievement.

Alpine is not alone in developing an electric sports car. Porsche remains committed to launching the 718 Boxster and Cayman EVs. Meanwhile, Caterham continues work on its Project V concept, aiming for an impressively low curb weight of just 1,190 kilograms (2,623 pounds).
