Drawing from repeated personal experience with stolen vehicles, I have clear views on each. In the end, I favor AirTags for certain uses like safeguarding motorcycles, but most owners will benefit more from a full GPS setup.

AirTags stand out for their low price and straightforward placement, which appeals to those who want a simple set-it-and-forget-it solution. Owners can purchase multiple units and conceal them in different spots, forcing thieves to spend extra time searching. Location checks happen remotely through a phone app. Still, these tags depend on nearby Bluetooth devices to update their position, so reports reflect only the latest activity from passing people.

GPS systems, on the other hand, connect directly to the vehicle battery. Those comfortable with basic wiring tasks can handle installation themselves, though professional help raises the total expense. Ongoing costs include subscriptions ranging from twenty to fifty dollars each month. In return, the system delivers constant tracking day and night without relying on other devices nearby, and it stays hidden from thieves.

You Should Choose GPS Over an AirTag

Two motorcycles were taken from me within the last two years, and each carried an AirTag that thieves found and discarded along the way. The tags actually work against recovery in these cases by notifying the thief of their presence, prompting a quick search and removal. This alert function prevents misuse for unwanted tracking but reduces effectiveness when a vehicle is stolen.

Standard GPS units avoid sending such warnings, raising the odds of getting the vehicle back. Many also allow phone access for remote starting or acting as a shutoff switch to stop the engine during a theft. AirTags still suit my needs because four of them cost around one hundred dollars, far less than most GPS packages once installation and fees are added. They qualify for insurance discounts and help me locate a parked motorcycle. For lower-value bikes that may suffer heavy damage in a theft, the cheaper option works fine. Higher-priced, customized, or sentimental vehicles call for the stronger protection of GPS instead.
