Many foresee AI causing widespread job losses in coming years across numerous fields once viewed as secure. The technology evolves rapidly, making it tough to overlook how machines could take over roles in various industries. The automotive sector faces similar pressures.

Skoda's exterior design chief provides a clear example, noting genuine surprise at the technology's capabilities after personal testing. Karl Neuhold shared with Dutch outlet Autoweek that simple inputs yield impressive results in moments.

'I am amazed by its performance. I apply it personally and find it remarkable how a basic drawing produces multiple refined options in seconds that match or exceed my own efforts.'

AI Enhances Output Yet Raises Questions

Neuhold views AI as a tool to accelerate creativity, enabling teams to test concepts that once required far more time. Basic drawings now generate polished visuals quickly, improving idea sharing within groups.

He advises colleagues to embrace the tools or risk obsolescence. Pure sketching will prove insufficient for staying competitive, so professionals should integrate AI into daily processes.

A downside exists though. Smaller groups producing more work faster could lead companies to reduce design staff overall. Neuhold highlights worries for newcomers, as instant high-quality outputs might limit entry points and skill-building chances.

'Will fewer staff suffice in future? Sadly that seems likely. It poses real hurdles for emerging talent seeking to gain expertise. The output quality remains striking and hard to believe.'

AI May Threaten Junior Roles

The situation creates tension where veterans boost efficiency while entry positions shrink, potentially leaving newcomers without paths to experience. This could create longer-term shortages of skilled professionals.

Neuhold still values core abilities and asks applicants to show hand sketches that reveal original thinking during reviews.

The difference matters. Producing appealing images differs from crafting concepts that align with brand values, satisfy engineering needs, and meet buyer expectations. Car design requires handling proportions, sensors, lights, and regulatory compliance beyond visuals alone.

Will Designs Lose Distinctiveness?

A larger issue involves ownership of AI-generated concepts. With easy production of many ideas, firms must address intellectual property and avoid homogenized looks across brands using identical tools.

Neuhold stresses that designers need insight into customer desires and ways to deliver surprises. AI speeds the path from idea to image, yet human judgment remains essential for defining the final vehicle.

Those who master AI stand to lead, while new talent may struggle most to secure initial chances in the field.
