Overview

Seeing a supersonic SR-71 Blackbird jet up close makes it tough to picture how something so big moves that quickly. The GMC Hummer EV, a massive full-size electric pickup, challenges physics in much the same manner.

While the Hummer EV lacks the Blackbird jet engines, its electric motors handle the job of overcoming its nearly five-ton weight just as effectively. The base 2X model delivers solid speed via its 570-hp dual-motor setup, yet the 1000-hp 3X tri-motor version delivers a 3.3-second dash to 60 mph that feels unreal. Standard all-wheel drive, strong off-road ability, and useful electric range combine with its wild performance to make the Hummer EV Pickup both practical and over the top.

Expert Tip: For those seeking less extreme options, the highly rated Rivian R1T offers faster charging, greater range, and a lower price than the Hummer EV.

What's New for 2027?

Updates remain small for 2027. Several fresh color choices join the lineup, such as Dark Ridge, Azurite Blue, Dark Ember, Deep Void Matte, and ICON Yellow. The ICON shade recalls the classic Hummer H2 yellow and comes on a limited ICON|25 edition that adds black trim, numbered badges on the cluster, and special infotainment visuals.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

EV Motors: 570-hp dual motor, 1000-hp tri motor

Buyers can choose two or three electric motors on the Hummer EV Pickup, both with all-wheel drive. The dual-motor version makes 570 horsepower while the tri-motor version reaches 1000 horsepower. Although the acceleration impressed us, the stopping power did not. The nearly 10,000-pound truck needed 211 feet to halt from 70 mph, with fade appearing after repeated stops. Low-speed handling benefits from rear-wheel steering, yet at higher speeds the truck feels bulky like other tall pickups.

0–60-MPH Times

C/D 60-mph Test: 3.3 seconds (Edition 1 tri-motor)

In Comparison: Our tested Hummer EV Edition 1 used the 1000-hp setup and hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds with its Watts to Freedom launch mode. Few pickups match that pace, and none this heavy come close. GMC claims the new Carbon Fiber Edition will reach 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, matching a C8 Corvette despite weighing far more.

Towing and Payload Capacity

Max Towing: 12,100 pounds

Maximum towing reaches 12,100 pounds on the dual-motor model, beating the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T ratings. Tri-motor versions are limited to 7500-8500 pounds. In our test with a 6100-pound trailer, range fell to roughly 140 miles at highway speeds.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

EPA/Claimed EV Range: 282-318 miles

Two battery sizes are offered. The standard pack yields EPA estimates of 311 miles for the 2X and 314 miles for the 3X. A larger 24-module battery can extend range to 381 miles per GMC, though the Extreme Off-Road package lowers that to 359 miles.

Our highway test of the Edition 1 covered 290 miles. Peak charging hit 287 kW but averaged only 98 kW, requiring over two hours for a 10-90 percent charge. GMC advertises 100 miles in 10 minutes, yet our experience took longer.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

EPA City Ratings: 52-59 MPGe
EPA Highway Ratings: 42-47 MPGe

Weight hurts efficiency. The dual-motor model with 22-inch wheels earns EPA figures of 59 city, 47 highway, and 53 combined MPGe. The tri-motor version drops slightly to 58 city, 46 highway, and 52 combined. Check the EPA site for full details.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Materials seem average for the price, and space is less generous than in a GMC Sierra 1500. Optional removable roof panels create an open-air feel like old GM T-tops, and they store in the front trunk for a convertible-like experience similar to the Jeep Gladiator.

Second Row: The oversized body provides generous rear seating for passengers and gear of various sizes.

Cargo Capacity: This crew-cab model features a five-foot bed. Storage includes large door pockets and a roomy center console.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 13.4-inch screen handles infotainment alongside a 12.3-inch digital cluster. Epic Games supplied the graphics, which look sharp yet show some lag. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and OnStar.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Super Cruise hands-free driving comes standard and performs well. Basic aids like lane-keeping and blind-spot monitoring are included too.
