After years of limited activity, Stellantis' SRT performance brand is returning with force through multiple sporty vehicles planned for the company's U.S. lineup. Leading the effort is a new Dodge sports car named the Copperhead, which revives a moniker from a 1990s concept. Dodge has clarified that this model is not meant as a direct successor to the famous V-10 Viper, yet the Copperhead will play a comparable part as the brand's top halo vehicle for both Dodge and SRT.

Why It Matters

The Copperhead will boost Dodge and SRT's credibility in performance circles by offering a more track-oriented machine than the top Charger variants. Those Chargers deliver strong output but are bulky and heavy, limiting their agility. The Copperhead will use a more compact size and newer technology to elevate Dodge's performance image, which is vital as Ford and Chevy push out even more extreme sports cars.

Platform

Dodge has not yet revealed the Copperhead publicly, though a full-scale model appeared at Stellantis' Investor Day earlier this year. While it shares some roofline traits with the current Charger, Stellantis executive Tim Kuniskis confirmed it does not use the Charger platform due to battery placement constraints in the STLA Large architecture. Kuniskis noted on a podcast that the car incorporates global synergies, allowing SRT to leverage existing investments from other projects for production components.

This approach raises the possibility that the Copperhead could draw from the Maserati GranTurismo's Giorgio platform. That platform supports low, sleek proportions and could help offset development costs. Recent indications suggest Alfa Romeo may extend the Giorgio platform's use, and the Copperhead could provide additional rationale for keeping it in production.

The Copperhead will feature aggressive styling, including a vent-heavy blacked-out front end. The hood design mixes elements from the Charger Daytona EV with a traditional scoop, while aerodynamics are emphasized through a front splitter, brake-cooling vents, and a large rear wing reminiscent of the Viper ACR.

Powertrain

The powertrain remains undisclosed, though the shown model had dual exhausts, confirming a combustion engine. A V-10 return seems unlikely given regulations and Dodge's statements, pointing instead to a Hemi V-8. An updated supercharged 6.2-liter unit could deliver over 777 horsepower, building on outputs seen in recent Ram and Charger models.

Kuniskis hinted at possible new powertrain ideas that might not exist yet, ruling out hybridization for longevity reasons. Speculation includes potential use of Maserati's Nettuno V-6 or its ignition technology, though details await confirmation.

Competition

Kuniskis positioned the Copperhead as a hyper-muscle car rather than a direct Corvette rival. Still, it will likely face the 670-hp Corvette Z06 and upcoming hybrid Corvette variants, plus a potential Camaro successor and the 795-hp Mustang Dark Horse SC from Ford.

What Might Go Wrong

Much depends on the engine selection. A familiar V-8 would please fans but risks seeming dated without updates. A newer powerplant could offer technical appeal yet might distance core Dodge buyers.

Estimated Arrival and Price

The Copperhead is expected before 2030, possibly as a 2029 model. Pricing should start at or above $100,000, with potential increases based on the final powertrain and options.
